Yes. You need a filtered data *slicer*.

If you aren't monitoring Passport, try LTR Analyzer. It works from a discriminator tap and audio input.

I've used LTRTrunk for awhile with a simpler unfiltered data slicer. I like the
display window which is looks like Trunker. However, there are problems
with bogus Group IDs, and voice causing "talk-off" (LTR decoding stops).

The filtered slicer is not rocket science but more effort, and requires some
semi-precision (R and C) components; and it isn't powered directly from
the serial port.

LTR Analyzer gets around this, but provides a line-by-line display. It goes
directly to the soundcard input from disc. tap. It provides a lot of good info,
more than LTRTrunk, but I find both useful.

I've run LTRTrunk in a DOS window under Windows (98 and XP) with no
problems. I don't think there's a Linux version, and don't know how it would
work under a Windows emulator.

well im trying to hear ltr passport what level slicer would i need?

You would need the basic 2-level slicer. When you say "hear" is that just a figure of
speech? LTRTrunk doesn't let you hear the audio, it just tracks groups. You'd need
to drive a separate receiver (which has remote control capability and is supported by
the program) through a serial interface, to do that.

A data slicer converts a pulse transition (high to low or low to high) to an interrupt inside the computer. Software makes note of the new level and measures the time between interrupts to deduce pulse width. The end result is a stream of ones and zeroes.

Slicers were popular when sound cards were just that; an optional card you could plug into an ISA slot.

Today sound is standard and serial ports are not.

I should add that LTR and Passport data is subaudible. You need a filtered slicer to remove any speech before it gets sliced.

alright so if i wanted to see what all freq my ltr passport system around here uses ( i am using a bct 8 scanner) i would need a discrminator tap (which i have in place on it) and a level 2 slicer. correct? also if thats correct what would i scan just my control channel or what? thanks for all the help so far guys!

LTRTrunk is not going to figure out the frequencies for you. Unlike Moto systems there is
no way to determine the frequency from the channel numbers (in this case Repeater Numbers)
transmitted over the air; similar to EDACS, the radios and system know the mapping, but
you will not. Also, you need to map the known frequencies to repeater numbers, which
can be done as they come active. Work is involved, it's far from plug/play. Maybe the
system's already been mapped; have you checked the database, or someone else in
your area? The FCC database can be helpful too.

Dave

Just wondering about this...forgot whether Passport systems use bandplans. If so it might not
be quite as random as I thought, but still needs work.

well my freq are outdated in the data base some are correct but there are new ones me and a local friend have found that they use just by late night of punching in radom freq and listening to them, so if ltr trunk won't figure them out what way would i be able to find out new freq that they use?

Start with the home channels. LTRTrunk will tell you the channel number as you tune each one. Submit those to the database. Find the other frequencies from the FCC license. You can correlate the remaining voice channels with a little patience.
