I'm going to bet all of the equipment in Crawford was WHCA equipment as they take care of all comms (Yes, even Protection Detail, separate from regular SS) for POTUS. As for a the amount of equipment, back when Bush #1 was President, WHCA rented a house next the Bush "compound" in Kennebunkport and converted it to a complete communications facility for support of the President and the SS, so I would imagine the amount in Crawford would be about the same.

WHCA went to system saber IIIs in the early/mid 90's from MX300 series radios, late 90's they changed again to astro saber IIIs, I don't believe WHCA ever had any XTS-3000s in their inventory and went straight to the XTS-5000. I'm not sure what they are running for encryption in the 5000's but I can confirm that they ran DES-XL/OFB in everything before them.

Some XTS4000's floating around out there also. Not real popular, but I noticed a few SAIC's and other top level folks are carrying them in the FBI.

Haven't seen anything else but DEA radios coming in here for service lately...

The info I have received is that the USSS uses Motorola XTS/XTL5000 with AES 256 encryption.

For the record, AES-256 is the new standard that is approved by the Federal government for encryption. Forget about listening to encrypted communications, because
1.) It's illegal
2.) refer to reason #1

3.) All legal issues aside, it's difficult enough to accomplish that it's not even worth bothering to try.

I remember listening to the USSS back in 1988 during the Democratic Presidential debates. The debate event was held at UNH in Durham NH and I was living in Durham at the time. There were a large number of Democratic candidates and this required a large USSS presence. Because there were so many protectors needed for so many protectees, there weren't enough of the "newer" encrypted radios to go around. So....they had to break out their pile of ancient analog brick radios for everybody to use. The result was more than 95% of the comms were totally in the clear (i.e., analog, unencrypted)!! The "newer" radios having DES encryption were Motorola Expo series portables. The older ancient radios used IIRC were Moto HT220 garbage portables...definitely bricks! It was a real monitoring treat with all the activity in town that week!

The 4000s are for the DOJ IWIN system only I believe.

Everything with the USSS is AES Digital P25 with the ability to go "clear" P25.
Forget about trying to monitor. They rekey before every detail.

Had lunch yesterday and found out that all of the POTUS detail is indeed XTS5000/XTL50000 radios with AES256. Interestingly enough, they are also playing with some type1 encryption boards for the POTUS detail as well.

As for regular field USSS it is still a combination of "old" and new stuff from Astro Sabers up to current XTS/XTL5000. Eventually all of the field offices will be up to XTS/XTL5000s.

Oh, so we shouldn't try to break their AES? :)

Who exactly is the "they" that you claim re-keys before every detail, and why would "they" want or need to do that?

Tim
P.S. It is true that I do re-key the locks on my house before leaving to go hunt chipmunks each night!

Sure. And come back when you are successful!

Who exactly is the "they" that you claim re-keys before every detail, and why would "they" want or need to do that?
They is easily understood from the thread and THEY do it because they want to, can, and have procedures that say it is the right thing to do.

It is true that I do re-key the locks on my house before leaving to go hunt chipmunks each night!
Good for you.

They would be USSS, and not every detail gets a rekey. For example rekey in/around DC is every 45 days (or sooner as neccessitated) as well as each trip team has a different key loaded. Since the key code is provided by NSA (or at least it was back in my day), NSA sets the key standards.

Yes, I was being facetious, in response to the erroneous info that radios are re-keyed before each detail...

Motorola also had the Saber X and the Astro X which were portable radios broken down into smaller componets to "slim them down" so they would not be visable under suites/clothing. Once in a great while one or two shows up in DRO or even ebay. I came across some older Moto docs which pointed towards WHCA and other agency use.

The USSS does have the ability to go clear/encypted when they want to. This is helpful to do coordniation when out of area personnel come in and do not have a local key loaded (yet) into the radio so it never hurts to but them in the scan list. But, its not like your going to find out where the all the Nixon tapes are.

Nice discussion about the US Secret Service stuff here....

Maybe some of you visits my website with audio files of the US Secret Service during a trip of POTUS (Clinton) to Europe in 1997. Most of the comms was encrypted (DVP), but some parts of the comms were in the clear.

For 2 weeks I was a 'little' surprised while watching the film 'the Sentinel' with Michael Douglas. The sound editor of 20th Century Fox simple ripped my unique audio files somewhere in 2006 from my website and used them commercially by mixing them up in this film!!!!!

They didn't send me a simple e-mail with a notice or a thanks....

Read the article in Dutch, Netherlands language here

Or the translated version in English here

Anyone suggestions?

Nice site, one minor correction, the encryption used for the '97 trip was DES-XL not DVP. I loaded enough of those damn radio on that and other trips.
