I was never a guard but you are right, maybe we are too serious. As long as we don't get personal and nasty to security people. Sure, maybe it's not the most exciting job and it depends where are are deployed but hey, you still get a check boring or not. Better than nothing in times like these.

Undisclosed urban location.
Know several people that work as mall security guards.
Some making upwards to $70,000 a year.
Their spelling and grammar are a lot better than I see on these forums.
Lighten up on them, they probably think your job sucks too.

Every so often I'll listen to our mall in the next city over. I usually monitor them on them on the weekends and during holiday shopping times.

I used to work for a retail store in one of the larger malls in the area, one with a pretty decent mall security department. I'd say there was a pretty even mix of old-timer 'have beens' so to speak and younger guys aspiring to eventually find careers in law enforcement. The guy who ran it was an ex-police chief and I never found anything to laugh about when it came to him or his department.

Contrast with some of the guys I've seen working at other smaller malls and I think it's safe to say it all comes down to your budget for security.

Yep

I have listened to them. Sometimes they collaborate with the local police/fire depts. around here. (Although, they do not have a shared frequency.) Some are incompetent, but some are quite helpful to public safety.

Yes indeed. I enjoy taking walks if I have nothing else to do. In the winter, I walk inside the area malls. As a single guy, there are quite a few pieces of "eye candy" that make the walk a true pleasure. Back to the subject in that the stores themselves often use low power radios. While I never take the scanner into the mall, I often take it with me in the car so as I approach the mall, these low power(many color dots) frequencys are jumping. Usually price checks or other low key traffic.

I'm sure a lot of that "eye candy" is in reality jail bait. The line has blurred between what looks like a 14 yo girl and what looks like a 21 yo versus actual ages. And I'm talking from the perspective of having worked in a waterpark, not seeing shoppers during winter at the mall. I'm not saying this to be dirty, but just for others to be wary.

Had worked Security As A Shift supervisor for The HIG Main Campus In Hartford Ct Off/on during My years out of High school Back Aways Ago 1st & 3rd Shifts.
Observations.

1. Pay/Bennys Is Generally Poor Cuz it's Usually Contract Security, HIG Was and Always will Be, they are CHEAP! If Inhouse, Pay & Bennys MUCH BETTER Along with the quality Of Help Hired By the office

2.Eye Candy YES! It's About the ONLY Benifit They Can't Take Away From You LOL

3. Boring? Yes, Most Of the Time, but On 3rd ounce on My outside rounds I came Upon A Rape Victim, A Local Police Capt's daughter. Did what i Had to Do & got a "Atta Boy" for it. Found Out Later That daddy's dept Caught This Scum & Gave the $h*thead a good & Proper tune up!

4. Yes You Take alotta Grief, but if You worked One account Steady & were good at It & Was Firm but fair with the Client, Normally no Probs, but ALWAYS A Few knuckleheads Out There & On Them you Just Gave them The 2 min warning as I called It & they didn't listen, you Had the Hammer dropped On them Simple as that.

5. Barney Fifes? Yes at times, but see above, It Goes along with Quality Or Quantity Hiring Practices To fill a slot On a Account

In closing.

Depends On where you are & The Company You work for. as a Poster said, It's A Job.

When I Get Closer to retirement, i might Get Back Into it, but for now we Slug along

I will Usually give Security Gaurds the Benifit of the doubt, Until proven Otherwise
