Most are low power, but you may get lucky from the parking lot. The best handheld method I've found is by near field capture using Uniden Close Call/Signal Stalker, GRE Signal Stalker II, or the new GRECOM Spectrum Sweeper (PSR-500, 300).

Most major malls have decent power repeaters to ensure penetration into the concrete cavern, metal roof facilities that they are.

I can hear Concord mall from about 5mi away on a hand held. Most department stores use radio systems for loss prevention also. They generally are not on repeaters though. Goto any large single floor retailer like a dicks, Best Buy or Circuit city and they use FRS radios. They will only make it a little past the parking lot.

Most Malls use Repeaters. Depending on where the Repeater is located you should hear it for some distance. As for individual Stores, probably simplex and maybe a mile , if that.

I went to the Christiana Mall the other night...the first time I've been there in about 15 years or so. I was shocked! It was like walking through a prison yard. Not a family place anymore! Now I know why DSP has routine foot patrols there.
