GMRS repeaters have input and output frequencies. The input comes from the output of the transmitting field unit. The radio must be programmed to apply a shift, or offset, when it keys up. On gmrs repeaters, it is +5 MHz. The other way to do it, is to program separate receive and transmit freqs. On top of that, the repeater should need an access tone, or pl tone.

If the offset or tx freq or tx coded squelch is wrong, no one will hear you.

1st - Your transmitter has to be FCC Type accepted, which most Boafeng radios are not.
2nd- If you know of a local repeater, you should ask permission of the operator before you use it. They can tell you what input frequency and tone code to use. Most GMRS repeaters are operated by clubs or REACT groups.

You can search the databases for GMRS repeaters in your area:

Thank you for the replies and info. I will ask the repeaters owners for access. Are repeaters only turned on to use at certain times or are they always on?. For example i have 2 baofeng. Can I connect both to a repeater and use them at longer distance? Thanks

I think you replied in the wrong thread.

The owner or trustee will answer your questions.

Most if not all in NoVA are open and 24/7. Also they state you are to use a FCC approved gmrs transceiver. I chuckle a bit but being this close to DC you can expect to be monitored. Not necessarily for GMRS compliance only.

Thanks for the info. What official GMRS radios do you recommend that will. Ot brak the bank as someone starting off. I would mostly want to connect both of them to a repeater so that it can get some distance. Thanks

Midland has been a respectable name with Radioditty an also ran. Baofeng are less expensive but you get what you pay for. My thought is if one is using someone else's repeater you should use a medium to high quality transceiver. Same with amateur radio. If you are interested in chatting with others vice say family then think about studying and getting your amateur radio license. Much more opportunity to meet new people many who are willing to help mentor. And with the technician level license amateur radio DMR allows more opportunities to talk with others across the world.

Thanks for the info. Goal is to ise 2 to 3 radios to speak eith family members. Each of us are about 10 miles apart. Thats why I was asking about GMRS and connecting to a local repeater so we can each have a radio and talk to each other. Also we can use when camping.

Sounds like a reasonable plan given a handheld range is probably good for a mile +/-.
