To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

So I have an XTL2500 UHF model, it is programmed with several repeaters in it, they all have they're own PL/CTSS tones for TX and RX, some of the repeaters do share the same frequency, but still have their own tones, my problem I can be sitting on say "REPEATER 1" and start hearing traffic thats actually coming from "REPEATER 5" because 1 and 5 share the same frequency but still have their own different RX tones. This also makes scan a complete mess as it will stop on a channel when there is traffic but 90% of the time the wrong channel. If I hit nuisance delete the wrong channel goes away and the right one pops up, I made sure to check CPS and confirm that "Receive Squelch Type" is set to PL. Can anyone help me try to get it working correctly? Thank you for your time.

Sounds like the 'off hook decode' is not set correctly.

Easy way to address this is to make sure the microphone (if one is connected) is hung up on a metal clip.
If no microphone is connected, you'll need to go in and find the setting that controls that. On the older radios it was called "hang up box defeats PL" or something similar.

I don't have my Astro Mobile software at home, so I can't look up the exact name/location, but I'm sure one of the fine individuals on this site can give you better directions.

He can temporarily ground the mic hook button to see if that puts the receiver in PL mode. I usually open all my Motorola mics and jumper the hook button to ground. That way all my mics work on all radios and I can still use the monitor function.

Okay no the mic is not currently grounded to a mic mount. I have another mic, different model it’s from the XPR series but I believe it works on the XTL and I believe it’s all plastic. I could try it? Or temporarily ground the mic and see, do I need to change anything in CPS first?

If the radio is programmed to mute when you ground the mic hangup then all stock mics should work the same and should be in noise squelch mode. Temporarily ground the mic clip and see what happens.

I don’t see the option in CPS so I’m not sure if it’s selected or not. Do you know where it might be?

Well, it looks like that might have been my issue. I grounded the mic and every time someone keyed up on a repeater it was the correct one shown on the display. I would underground and the next transmission would show the wrong repeater. Did you say there was a way I could take apart the mic and ground it out from the inside instead of having to mount it?

Take the back off the mic and there will be a wire from the hang up clip going somewhere. Cut that near the board and solder it to ground, which is usually the mic cable shield.

For changing the hang up button mode for PL, from the main menu select Conventional then Conventional Configuration then under General there will be a box to check for HUB Defeats PL. I believe that will put the radio in PL receive when the mic is grounded or not.
Okay I will try that thank you!

I'm a visual kind of guy. I added a screen grab to help the fellow.

@Huntercw this box checked means the radio will always receive in carrier squelch if the mic is not in a hang up clip/grounded. I always keep this unchecked. I have no need to monitor with out PL/DPL before I transmit.
