I got back from visiting a friend over the weekend down in LA/San Bernardino county (a little of both actually) and it was interesting to note they use conventional Thomas Guide notation on callouts, like "Map 963 F4" or whatever. As my friend does own the Thomas Guide books and software, it comes in handy when tracking where the calls actually are going. You can flip to that specific page and just do the F across 4 down and wham, there you are, or just input the street address in the software and correlate it to get the actual graphical map.

My question is that when I monitor the SNACC system here in Vegas, I note something like this being said:

"District 98, Map 38, 27, Phantom 52..."

Ok, someone clue me in because that makes absolutely no sense to me and doesn't correspond to anything that I can find info about. I have the Southern Nevada scanner book but even that's a bit thin in terms of exactly how the calls are mapped out in our area. Are they using some type of map book similar to a Thomas Guide that I can purchase myself to keep tabs on the calls or... is it something proprietary that only they have access to or something custom designed just for the CC fire dept system?

Any help would be greatly appreciated... thanks

This is a mapping program that has been produced and is maintained by the different cities within Clark County and by Clark County itself. I believe paper map books are available for sale by the different entitites. Each district (one square mile) in the Las Vegas valley consists of four numbers such as 3827 with the first two numbers on a vertical axis and the last two on a horizontal axis. The vertical axis numbers increase as you move from top to bottom and the horizontal axis numbers increase as you move from left to right. An example of this follows.

Districts:
3111 3112 3113 3114 3115 3116 3117 3118 3119
3211 3212 3213 3214 3215 3216 3217 3218 3219
3311 3312 3313 3314 3315 3316 3317 3318 3319
34..
35..
36..
37..
38..
39..
41..
42..

This continues and no districts end with the number of zero.

The phantom is a location within the district spaced equally apart. The upper left portion of a square mile district starts with the number of 11 and moves left to right such as : 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19. There is no phantom ending with zero. The phantom repeates itself within the district one line below starting with: 21,22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, and 29. It repeats one line below starting with 31, 32, etc. The phantoms continue to the last line within the square mile district which starts with 91, 92, 92 going up to 99. Another square mile district begins below.

The district and phantom brings a location to within a few hundred feet of a map coordinate such as district 2233, phantom 11 which would be in the 6700 block of East Carey Ave. up on Sunrise Mtn.

Rural locations often have a five digit district.

I had a complete book for Clark County back in 1996 but it is way out of date given all the development in the valley since then. The maps also show you the fire hydrant locations and often the hundred block of the address. Special detailed maps exist for mobile home parks, large business and apartment complexes and other locations.

Hope this sheds some light on your question.

The Henderson "district" as they say in their dispatch refers simply to the area of responsibility for a given fire station in that city.

Districts And Phantoms

They represent a evolution of the fire alarm box system, now gone many years
districts are lower the farther north you are and higher as you move south, they are on mile grids with 99 "phantom box locations"

I believe each station has a number of "districts" they are responsible for being first in to.

I grew up in District 2523, near Rancho and Charlston
E5 and Rescue 4 used to be in my area, now I believe E10, E5, R10, and E15(CCFD) are all first in to my neighborhood.

Been trying to find a map of some kind online that would show the districts, etc. Scoured the Las Vegas city and Clark County websites to no avail, so maybe at some point I'll get to City Hall or someplace and hopefully be able to find a copy or purchase one of the maps so I can put it up on the wall and be able to see exactly where the calls are being sent. I know the "Alarm Office" website page links to Google Maps but that's a chore to hit with each one I hear over the air - much easier just to look up over my monitors on the wall and wham, there ya go.

Thanks for the info...
