I take that you live near Lake Erie? I would just scan the marine bands and see what you get.

I agree, you need to be monitoring the entire marine band. I don't know where you are in relation to my location, which is Erie, PA, but you should hear quite a bit. Ch. 16 156.8 is obviously a must; the local CG offices/stations, including Erie, Detroit and Buffalo (all of which I monitor) use 157.05 ch. 21 a lot for CG related traffic including SAR's; and ch. 22 157.1 is often active with marine announcements.

I also would not discard traffic from Canadian CG. I listen to Sarnia and Prescott CG stations, and even though you often can't hear the ships themselves due to distance they are very active. Chs. 11, 12, 24-27, 65, and 85 are often used. And then don't forget the noncommercial and pleasure boat traffic.

I have a page on my website dedicated to marine monitoring, which you can find in my signature.

I think for a handheld 75 miles would really be stretching the limits of your radio/antenna. I live perhaps 5 miles tops from the water and have a window-mounted antenna and even with that I often have trouble hearing the ship side of any conversations. You may get to hear the Coast Guard station(s) that are closest to you, but likely not much else. Maybe someone else could chime in as to how far you can be from the water and still receive marine traffic...?

I think 75 miles is kinda far to hear anything on the marine band because marine radios don't put out much power.

You will be able to receive, but you likely won't hear much from Lake Erie. 75 miles is going to be well over the horizon for your set up. VHF can skip, but very rare. You may pick up coast station running from tall towers, but a lot of marine VHF is simplex, so you likely will ONLY hear the coast stations.
You wouldn't be able to build a tower high enough on your end to "see" 75 miles reliably, especially from 25 watt VHF radios low on the water.

Just too much physics standing in the way.

Only "real" option would be a remote controlled receiver located close to the lake and fed back to your home. A lot of obstacles to overcome with that, including price, location, etc.

Even with the antenna being high enough and having a good low loss coax run,75 miles is kinda stretching it.Unless maybe the marine radios are transmiting with high power and its good weather.
