Hello there. Just wanted some suggestions on equipment and programming the MSP (might be the wrong thread). I want to listen to Massachusetts State Police Trunk, which is P25 Type 2 I live in the Essex/Middlesex area. I wanted to program it with the entire state since it will be mounted in my vehicle. Does anyone have reccomendations on a scanner and where I can find the program or knowledge on how to program the talkgroups?

(LESS IMPORTANT) New Hampshire and Vermont State Police would be my secondary task as I travel interstate quite frequently.

Please be slightly more specific (Essex and Middlesex cover a large area) for where you plan to listen to the MSP. Which we can then help you in the short term (2-3 yrs) as the Phase II P25 system is build out.

Currently the majority of Eastern Mass is a Type II (non P25 system) and you listening area can be found with Sites 5 or 8

I will be very mobile in general. I travel from the Essex County area to Boston very frequently, so that's really where I plan to listen from. Any recommendations on a scanner that doesn't break the bank?

If you plan on using it mobile, moving across the state, I would highly recommend the SDS200. The reason is, as Bill Stated above, in some century, but hopefully soon, MSP will be building out a P25 Phase II system, and surely there will be the well documented issue with Simulcast Distortion. I kid (kinda) about the Century thing, but it is coming. Plus as other nearby areas add TDMA (Phase II) trunking, you're going to love having that. With that said, if you don't feel like shelling out the money for a SDS, a BCD536 would be a nice option. It's an easy to use scanner, with a fantastic receiver and audio replay. Plus with the add on GPS, you can have it automatically turn on or off sites as you drive around. (And areas). The GPS programming for your favorites lists can be done fairly easily with software.
