Suffolk County, Massachusetts (MA) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

Boston Police show as "RM" but I dont think that any of the mobiles or portables ever transmit in simplex mode. What does "RM" mean exactly? I would think that if I listened to a "RM" channel that sometimes I would hear a repeater loud and clear - and at other times I might hear very scratchy mobiles or portables - if I hear them at all.

Is "RM" being misapplied as a channel where you can hear a repeater output, and you can also hear mobiles coming thru that repeater? That woulld be redundant seemingly.

What does "RM" mean when it is applied to CHP 700 Mhz "extenders"? Does that mean a FB2 at the CHP Post, or does that mean a MO3 in a CHP field unit? Or both?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; CPU iPhone OS 5_1_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9B206 Safari/7534.48.3)

'R' means that a repeater is used on the frequency. 'M' means that there are mobiles and handheld radios used on the repeater input which is not normally programmed into a scanner. If you click on the type button, it gives the meaning of other letters that can be used.

RM means the output frequency could be transmitted through a repeater or simplex. M means mobile (simplex), R means repeater. More often than not if you have a mode programmed on a repeater, you also have a mode dedicated to direct mode using the repeater output, or a button/switch that means you can switch over.

Like the Buncombe Sheriff setup in NC:

Ch. 1: BCSO-1 = Sheriff Dispatch Repeater
Ch. 2: BCSO-1D = Sheriff Dispatch Talkaround

So, the RM would signify that you can hear traffic through the repeater, or in talkaround mode if close enough.
