I just moved to Medicine Hat last night and was just scanning through the whole spectrum when I noticed an active frequency that ended with the oh so familiar EDACS beeps at the end of the transmission, I found the control channel(s) 452.6875, 452.3375, 452.0875 and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this system. I caught the tail end of something in this range last night and it was some guy with an accent and thats what I just heard again. Is this a possible system used by the British training in Suffield?

*update: definately sounds like some British soldiers judging by what they're talking about, could be really interesting if they were easier to follow.

This is what I found last year driving past Suffield. I just tossed the control channels up on the DB with all the freqs I discovered tossed in as well.. so the "sites" shown on that page mean absolutely nothing. Just that I had 3 control channels and a bunch of other channels with the telltale EDACS beeps.

Don't suppose you have the ability to run Unitrunker?........ it would help a lot!

Recently out in the area north of Brooks and could hear the activity on the Suffield freqs. posted on Radioreference. Didn't have Unitrunker, but have heard the acitivity on these frequencies for the past couple of years. Busy doing other things so did not really listen that closely to what was taking place. Certainly, over the past few years, sounds like the British Army training exercises.

I do recognize some of the frequencies and indeed they are used by the British Military training at Suffield. These frequencies are for the range safety teams that follow the training troops and are not used by the Battlegroups for tactical comms.

Yeah I plugged in one of the systems (the one that had the strongest control channel for me) and didn't hear anything, seems like another control channel popped up and the other 2 disappeared? I will figure this system out though! I don't have access to Unitrunker as I'm only using a MacBook at the moment and I just bought my 396 about a month ago.

I have these frequencies listed and confirmed used by the military in suffield area as part of an older Edacs system that was AGEIS digital at one time.

I understand that in Medicine Hat of the 3 channels that the police are on, only 1 is encrypted. Being that's the only encrypted channel, what exactly is on it? I've noticed tonight that the other police channels are completely dead tonight and that there is lots of traffic on the encrypted channel.

They usually encrypt when talking specifics about individuals, address, police ops.......They know that the scanners are listening so it is the sensitive stuff that they don't want us to hear.

Couple more quick questions...

Is it just me or does everyone else (in Medicine Hat) have a hard time picking up EMS units here. I usually hear the dispatcher plain as day but it either sounds like a one sided conversation or very broken up.

And is there ANY trunking systems on this end of the province that are monitorable from Medicine Hat?

Its not just you Mark.

I have the same problem depending on how close the EMS unit is to my home. I am just using the antenna that came with the scanner. EMS are not using a repeater as far as I know. I put an antenna in the attic of my garage that sure makes a big difference on my scanner in the garage.
