I have done a lot of google searches but this is just beyond me and a little frustrating. I run a website for security officers. I have been using the iphone app police scanner but now comes the time for a upgrade. What is a good handheld police scanner that will work with the Memphis police frequencies. I see things about trunks, digital, P25? I would like to spend no more then 300. Just something that works and can use it to update website when needed.

I would hold on for buying a scanner unless your really really want one. They are planning to upgrade very soon I've heard. Currently the pro 106 would be a good digital handheld scanner.

With the upcoming upgrade to P25, I would hold off until we know for sure if they will go Phase 2 or not. They expressed big interest for several years now in the TACN, even back when it was just getting started. We should have more conclusive data by early 2015. If they go just Phase 1, then anything from the PRO-96 and up will be fine. If they go Phase 2 capable, you want to have from the GRE PSR-800 up. That includes the Uniden BCD436HP/BCD536HP, Whistler WS 1080 and its sister.

That was extremely helpful. Those are a little more then I hoped to spend but I really need one. The models you just listed do they work on the system that is currently being used by Memphis?

Yes, any digital capable scanner works on the Shelby County TRS. It is technically an P16 system. An Legacy Motorola 800 MHz (Type II) Smart Zone, utilizing both analog, and digital (P25 CAI) TG's. It was created by converting the old Shelby County EDACS TRS, and upgrading the old Memphis Motorola system, and merging them into the system currently in use. The next phase will most likely be upgrading to Motorola's ASTRO-25 format. As stated, still unsure if they will go Phase 1, or merge into TACN yet. With the sheer volume of activity on the system, smart money would be go to Phase 2 and merge with TACN. TACN will also allow seamless interop with the AWIN, and MSWIN systems, as well as the rest of the State of TN. Not to mention better interop with the other local P25 conventional, and TRS's. I also have an idea, Bertlett will soon upgrade to its own P25, or go to TACN also.
