Just after 1:00 this afternoon the Mesa County Sheriff's Office became involved in a high speed chase.

Initial reports are that a suspect tried to rob a convenience store at
29 Road and North Avenue and then fled. Deputies chased the vehicle eastbound on Interstate 70 until the suspect turned around and headed westbound. Then the suspect exited the interstate and took officials through a residential neighborhood. It appears that twice officials tried to put down stop sticks.

Officials cornered were able to corner the suspect when he turned into a subdivision with a dead end. The suspect fled on foot into the desert but was taken into custody at gun point at around 1:30 p.m.

Man leads police on dangerous high speed chase

Posted: Dec 18, 2007 01:18 PM MST

GRAND JUNCTION (KJCT)- 19-year-old James Michael Lane led police on a lengthy and dangerous high speed pursuit through Grand Junction streets on Tuesday.

Lane was taken into custody in the desert North of the 26 1/2 Road a short time later.

At about 12:50 this afternoon Grand Junction police were called to the Bradley Sinclair station on 29 and north on reports of a man who had robbed one of the stores employees.

Deputies tried to stop a car, a red Pontiac Bonneville.. That matched the description of the robbery suspect... The suspect then sped up and the chase began.

The Grand Junction Police Department, Sheriff Deputies and Colorado State Patrol we're all involved in this pursuit.

At several points in the pursuit, officers asked dispatch if the chase should be called off, and they made sure not to chase the suspect into residential areas.

The chase started at D 1/2 Road.
The suspect then went East to 33 Road then North.
At the interstate... He is said to have driven West in the Eastbound lanes.
Then he got off at Horizon Drive and ended at 26 1/2 Road and the desert around 1:20.
We know he does have a prior record and is also a Corrections client.

The suspect did make off with an undisclosed amount of money from that gas station employee. No injuries were reported.
