Yes I know how it works and I understand they are law enforcement, but they're railroad police. I have a friend who used to be a Conrail officer. I've never seen a railroad cop ever need to talk to the local PD. Maybe for the bus situations, but most of the time that's handled by the locals. I talked to an MTA K9 officer who was still using a vertex on his person and talked directly to RTC right in front of my eyes. Unless something changed so drastically in the past month that I don't know about.

Then you haven't worked in Law Enforcement or in the position of the railroads. I have, and continue to do so. We worked with Amtrak all the time, but just like any other RRPD or PD in general, especially in the northeast, everyone keeps their castle.

Have the world come down on you, and you use whatever you need to.

Don't forget that Conrail has been gone for quite awhile and a lot of things have changed since then. I was talking to a PanAm, er Guilford er Boston & Maine cop (they were still considered B&M PD) who had everyone along his patrol route in his radio - and used it when needed.

Its not cookie cutter and there is a bunch that goes on behind the scene.

MTA PD deal with the NYPD regularly, they overlap considerably. They also have NCPD and SCPD capability (not sure with new NCPD system) and come up on their radios when they need to. I have also heard MTA PD with the CSP and at times other local PDs. Up where I live I hear Amtrak PD ask for local PD assistance, and not for a bus ... I have also seen Amtrak PD's K-9 be the first K-9 on scene for a perp search in my small town in CT.

MBTA PD talks to local PDs often in/around Boston/Massachusetts/RI, as well as Amtrak PD.

I'll revise my earlier answer...

CT ops are on the CSP system using V/8 APX's, and NY ops are U/8 for staten island, etc.

I didn't mind going to SI when work sent me there. I just hated the tolls but work paid for them. However, there are some really nice expensive houses on some hill tops with nice views.

But, it is SI.

I knew I wasn't going nuts! Yea I know they communicate with local jurisdictions they have to there isn't enough of a force to have only their officers. I just never knew they communicated directly. In New Jersey NJTPD / Amtrak / NS / CSX use SPEN 1 to communicate with other agencies.

APX 7000

It looks like almost everyone will have a new Motorola APX 7000 VHF/700-800 with the exception of Staten Island, due to their train OPS being on UHF.

They have had the APX and decided to issue them before the warranty expired.

Some are programmed with additional agencies like Suffolk County, but those are issued to ESU and maybe K-9.

There is a warehouse full of equipment for the Metro 25 I heard, which will go to GCT and Penn Station, even Jamaica and Atlantic Terminal on the LIRR.

That would be great, but it's not in the program of any of the radios I've seen. One of the supervisors on the radio project tried to explain the radio but (like myself) he didn't fully understand the complexities.

So far on the VHF it's better than the Vertex simply because it's a much better radio. As far as the CT system I get amazing coverage from Eastern Westchester County NY up to Northern Middlesex County, CT.

On the Metro 25 I get pretty good coverage in NYC, which should improve as the system is built up.

MTA PD is NOT leaving VHF anytime soon, the APX radios are VHF/7-800. I just programmed one for a LT on a new repeater for GCT. There MAY be other versions of the APX and Unity out there depending on the district they are assigned to, and they are also putting in APX mobiles in the RMP's.
MTA PD long range plans are to eventually go 7-800 system wide, but you are talking decades not years, and PD will always want to be able to talk to the trains.
Right now MTA PD is using the OLD Metro21 outfitted to pure P-25 for Staten Island only. A real waste as we could have just installed a VHF base on Chrysler or out there and all would have been fine.

Interesting, but as I said they are not leaving VHF only enhancing their coverage with the 7-800 system, that is not built yet in most areas. I understand the build out in NYC taking precedence, and 7-800 won't be available in the GCT until the 7 vendor project is completed, which is now on hold due to an internal investigation that I have no info on. All I can say was the contractor was escorted off the property by PD.

MTA Metro North has NO plans on going NXDN, I just ordered another 1000 HT-1250 portables, and are going to order another 1-200 CDM mobiles. The retrofit radios for the old Mitrek's are Harris M7300 mobiles. The only NXDN radios on property as I have said before is being used by the radio shop on their Wide Area VOIP backed system.

As I go into my 27th year here, all I can say is some people have made a career out of this radio system and I won't be here to see it.

Does Connecticut MTA PD plan to stay on 161.2200? I haven't heard a thing in a while on that channel.
