I am in the exploration stages of establishing a 2 way radio system with the purpose of enabling freelance news/fire photographers to communicate while out working in the field.

The purpose of the system would be to alert subscribers in realtime of incidents occurring in the Detroit media market via 2 way radio and possibly VOIP. My goal ultimately is to get a repeater on the air in downtown detroit that would be capable of providing reliable coverage to the entire area.

Anyone have an opinion on this idea?

so basically you want people to pay to listen to rebroadcast police calls ? or do you have some other source of information? is it automeated or does someone have to manually relay the traffic? what type of repeater are you talking about? business band i assume? $ for fcc license, and of course repeater hosting will cost big bucks unless you have a location. . . my guess freelaance reporters would probably prefer to purcase their own digital polics scanner since they can hear most of what happens locally with one. (-oakland cty)

my suggestion is to use the internet and stream the info. the infastructure is there all the people just need is a smartphone, you could even setup some way to submit tips info. . . hummm sounds like a subforum here. . .

good luck

I believe you are interested in setting up something similar to what exists in the Philly area. (At least it did, when I lived in PA.) Fire buffs that have their own radio system, for communicating with each other, when checking out the fireground. (Many members of the club were active firefighters.)

I found a reference to an upgraded system, compared to when I lived there, on page 6:

Did I understand this, correctly?

Why not just get your ham license and join the local ARES/RACES club? There's repeaters all over the place.

Because that's illegal.

I didn't say rebroadcast the fires (he never said that either). Reread his post, he said he wanted a repeater system for firechasers to talk to each other on a la ARES/RACES.

I did...

ARES/RACES isn't a repeater system for weather fans to talk about clouds. Anyways...

He is conducting business with people paying him, and the people paying him make money off the information received.

That cannot be done on ham radio. There's no question.
