I maintained these systems back in the mid-seventies. Nice back then, but nothing like what is available today. The receivers were manually tuned where you turned the knob and watched the "dial Tape" move, and the recorders were reel to reel.

I think you guys are confusting COMSEC (Communications Security) with SIGINT (Signals Intelligence). A course on COMSEC is generally about encryption of your own systems, not monitoring the systems of the other guys.

SIGINT and T/A (Traffic Analysis) is way more interesting than COMSEC.

spot on... i worked on an/trc 174b's and an/trc 173's in the army it was pretty easy stuff, just jump in and flip switches and rotate freq's
