mil virtual radar

I am running dump1090 and rtl1090 with virtual radar. Am I missing something? Virtual radar will tell me in the box when there is mil air overhead. It does not show it on the map.

On http://global.adsbexchange.com/VirtualRadar page, it shows the aircraft on the map. It also says its powered by virtual radar.

Why are these mil planes showing as being tracked, but not being shown on the map in my virtual radar?

I can see on the site, but its fun when its your own dongle showing you...

Because they are transmitting mode s for radar and not ADS-B (GPS)

Ok so how do they show up on ADS-B exchanges website showing their location on the live map?

I am watching them on that sites virtual radar map. Does dump 1090 and rtl1090 not decode that mode?

Mode S is standard. You receive Mode S automatically with the RTL and similar devices.

No, they are not. They are two separate things.

Correct. However, some military aircraft do activate ADS-B. E-6 TACAMO's and some tankers come to mind. I've also seen several fighters not over the United States with ADS-B activated.

You'd need MLAT to see them on the map. Can you get with friends in the town you live and have several feeds? One RTL by itself won't do it, MLAT is based on receive times and triangulation. That's why you see them on Flightaware or others.

Thanks for the response. I now have a better idea how it works and what mlat is. I only have access to 1 other dongle at my parents house 18 miles west of me.
