I am a new ham. I have been listening to ham bands via my handheld scanner for roughly 8 or 9 months, but just recently received my Technician ticket. I also do not have equipment ready to go yet, but have purchased a 2m mobile for the car, if I can figure out how in teh world I can place it somewhere! My wife recently purchased a new vehicle and now when I am in the car with the scanner, it stops on a specific frequency (146.79) everytime the ignition is on or the car is running. This just happens to be the frequency of the club I just joined repeater frequency. If I hold the scanner close to my body, it will allow the scanner to start scanning again, but if I pull it away from my body, it stops on the frequency again. Do you think I will be looking at a problem with using 146.79 in my vehicle? I have a dual band mag-mount antenna for the mobile radio for when its connected, but wondering even with the external antenna if it will be a problem. Thanks

I would start with a noise filter:

Automotive Electrical, Engine Noise Filters | TESSCO 800 472 7373

There might also be RFI getting in through the antenna, it'self. You can experiment with moving the antenna to different locations on the vehicle.

Also be aware that scanners can sometimes be susceptible to interference that won't phase an amateur radio receiver. If you can, find a fellow ham in your area that will have an HT or a mobile that you can temporarily install in your vehicle to determine if it is just an issue with your scanner.

I would start with a permanently mounted outside antenna. By permanent, I mean drill a hole. A good antenna is the first line of defense against vehicle generated noises. A mag mount is not a good antenna.
