I don't hear Bishop dispatch talking to the officers most of the time. Bishop comes out on 42.12 and the officer talks on 42.20. This isn't a problem when I am in bishops area on the same frequency. To confirm it last night I was listening to the 700 Mhz APCO extender frequency for Mojave and I heard the dispatch loud and clear coming thru but not on 42.12 on my 1/4 wave antenna. Bishop must using another frequency to transmit to the units and the units use 42.2 to go back.

I noticed and posted about the same thing in my area for the coastal division in San Luis Obispo County some weeks back. Have yet to figure it out.

The Bishop dispatcher has about nine transmitters to choose from to cover from the Nevada border south to the Mojave area. I went through the area to Reno last week and heard Bishop talking to Mojave units on the Gold. There are only two transmitters down south that cover the Mojave area which are Oak Peak near Tehachapi and Government Peak near Randsburg. I doubt Rogers Peak or the Cottonwood radio site will reach that far south. You will likely only hear Bishop that far south when there is traffic for that area. Most of the traffic on the Gold is heard farther north on 395 towards southern Inyo County, Bishop and the Mono County area.

Bishop CC is not on a simulcast system, transmitters are selected by the input voter or by the dispatcher manually selecting to be heard best in a given area..

North to south Bishop CC area of responsibility is 342 mles beginning at the LA County line on SR 14 to Topaz Ca on the Nevada border, so one transmitter being used at a time will not come close to being heard throughout.

I listen to the Crescent City/Del Norte feed all the time and have noticed that the transmit site repeating the units from the imput does not seem to be selected by the voter and is likely selected bv the dispatcher.

I hear the repeater loud and clear for long periods of time, then scratchy for a while, then not at all suggesting it's being manually selected to be repeated on one or two sites at a time. I also noted that when the emergency tone was activated that the tone was broadcast separately at one time on all sites.

Most CHP Dispatch Centers use vote steer to select the transmitter that provides the best reception for a given mobile unit. Only the Golden Gate, Los Angeles, Inland and Border Communications Centers are simulcast. See the following link for a description of the CHP Enhanced Radio System:

The attached map shows the locations of the transmitter sites.

On a related note, I noticed FCC licenses recently for the 44.94 MHz BLACK 2 channel in the Mojave area (Oak Peak, Government Peak, etc). KMD887 (CALIFORNIA, STATE OF) FCC Callsign Details

I hadn't seen any record of that frequency being used in the Inland Division, so I plugged it into the scanner to check. Over the last couple weeks I've been hearing intermittent key-ups with a 110.9 PL, which is used by Inland Division, and it sounds like it's in the early testing phase.

Has anyone else noticed this, or have any more info?

awesome inputs thank you all keep em coming. I know it is true about the dispatcher being able to select the radio site they are going out then most likely they will go out the site that they are seeing light on on the voter display right?

The new brown (Temecula) border area needs to be added. Map is out of date....it would be great to get a new map from somebody.

Wasn't that referred to as GOLD2 (with 110.9 PL) in the CHPPERS old 2009 "Radio Frequency Profile" document, with an input of 42.54?

Did they rename it to BLACK2?

You are probably right, "Gold 2" would make more sense since it's replacing the Gold channel in that area. Black 2 in Southern Division uses that frequency as the output, so that was all I had to go on. Do you have a link to the 2009 CHPPERS document?

My wife and I drove home yesterday from visiting family in Fallbrook. We had spent the first portion of our trip in the Phoenix area. I picked up Bishop quite well after peaking the hill south of Kramer Junction on 395. I heard a BLM ranger on 166.375 first regarding CPR being started at an accident scene. He was also speaking to an enroute helicopter from an air ambulance service. It was a fatal ATV accident near Garlock Road and 395 up a nearby canyon.

The BLM repeater being used was Government and it boomed in. Around Johannesburg.I heard Bishop CHP advising a couple of units of the incident and the signal was strong. I saw them rolling Code 3 at the top of the grade on the Ridgecrest side. Later I heard the BLM ranger on scene advise San Bernardino on their law enforcement frequency that the CHP was taking the lead on the investigation.

I was between Little Lake and Coso Junction and received a very strong signal on 42.200 and a strong signal on 42.120 from Bishop. I passed a southbound CHP traffic stop about 4 miles later. I never heard any weak signals on 42.120. I was not close enough to pick up the officer's extender as he didn't transmit when I was within a mile to the north or south of him. Bishop was likely transmitting on either Rogers or Cottonwood.

These are the CHP remote base stations Bishop uses for the Bishop, Bridgeport and Mojave area offices:

Pine Grove Hill - located southeast of Wellington, Nevada. It has been there for quite some time and was used to provide coverage for the northern portion of Mono County prior to the building of the facilities at the Sweetwater Electronic Site in the mid 1980;s. Sweetwater covers the area from Conway Summit to the Nevada state line so well, I'm not sure why Pine Grove is needed.

Sweetwater Electronic Site - located on a minor peak west of the main ridge of the Sweewater Mountain range and east of the U.S. 395/CA Highway 108 junction.

Conway Summit - just east of 395 at the summit.

Crestview - on a minor peak or hill east of 395 north of the Crestview state rest area.

Silver Peak - northeast of Bishop

Cottonwood - on the west side of 395 on the lower slope of the Sierra just north of the Cottonwood Creek hydroelectric plant.

Rogers Peak - north end of the Panamint range and north of that range's Telescope Peak.

Government Peak - near Johannesburg west of 395.

Oak Peak - west of Tehachapi and south of CA Highway 58.

There is some possibility that another is located at the Shewin Summit electronic site, the first hop of the state's microwave backbone north of Bishop. I will have to take a look at the state's FCC licenses to find out. My 1987 CHP system diagram is fairly accurate as not that many sites have been added in the last 30 years, but Sherwin Summit might have been one. I was inside the state's building at Sherwin about 15 years ago and seem to remember seeing a rack with CHP equipment in it. If the CHP has radios there then the number of Bishop CHP sites would be 10.
