The old Mon 51 only had a loading coil in the center of the whip and was good for about 30 to 500 MHz. The newer version added a fat loading coil near the bottom so it would pick up 800 MHz frequencies better. I had both the original Mon 51 and the RS discone. The Mon 51 was far superior for low band and VHF. It was about equal to the discone on UHF and was almost deaf on 800 compared to the discone. If you listen mostly to 800, the discone should be doing a good job for you. There is better coax and that may be part of the problem. If you mostly listen to UHF and lower, the Mon 51 would do a much better job.

ok why would my pro 96 be better with a 800mhg rubber duck than my discone overload you think i got a 2006 that works great on 800meg with the discone

The Pro96 usually doesn't have desense or overload problems on 800 MHz. You may be too close to a tower that has the system you are trying to monitor and it may be overloading the Pro96 but I need more information on the system and how far you are from the tower. Since the 2006 only receives 800 MHz but doesn't trunk track, it's not a good comparison for what's happening with the Pro96. How well you receive the control channel determines how well you can trunk track and, if you are too close to a tower, you may be overloading the front end so it doesn't do a good job trunk tracking. Have you tried using the attenuator and seeing if that made any difference.
