Montgomery Township Listeners I Need Your Help,

I have wanted to listen to the frequencies for some time now, except I am new to this. I was wondering if I bought a RadioShack Pro-164 radio, would I be able to pickup the county trunking system?

Hopefully Someone Can Help Me With This Question.

Thanks in Advance.

Montgomery Township police, fire, EMS, and DPW currently use analog talkgroups on the county's Motorola Type II trunked system. The Pro-164 is able to receive these channels and would be a fine choice for the present time.

The 164 can not receive digital channels. The county Educational Services Commission school buses contracted to Montgomery use a digital channel so you would not be able to hear them. As far as Montgomery police/ fire/ EMS/ DPW, I am only aware of them using digital channels for mutual aid (to Franklin, say) or in very extraordinary circumstances.

Be aware that in the next couple years or so the system will be upgraded to be all digital. The plans were reported on this forum a while back; they may have slipped a bit but it will happen eventually because of FCC requirements for narrowbanding. Once that upgrade takes place the 164 will not be able to monitor those Montgomery channels. It is possible that some departments will use digital encryption, which means that even digital scanners can not receive them.

You may wish to invest in a digital scanner now, or find a cheaper new/used analog-only scanner for now and plan on buying a digital scanner when the system is upgraded if the stuff you want isn't encrypted. Frankly I suggest holding off on buying digital as long as reasonably possible since new models with nice new features come out every couple years. Or you'll be able to buy today's models discounted for close-out or used in the future.

Setting it Up

Thank You for the Information Jim.

I actually have the PRO-164 radio currently and am unable to figure out how to program it so that I am able to get these talkgroups. I have tried programming it for Motorola trunking, except all I hear is pure static. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, unless I am not using the right frequency.

Any Help Would Be Much Appreciated.

Jim is correct - Somerset County will transition it's system to a phase-I P25 system by the end of 2012. I agree with holding on to see what the major manufacturers are going to do in response to producing units that are capable of monitoring phase-II (TDMA) P25 trunking...

Thanks for the information. I actually have the Radioshack Pro164 radio, and am unable to get anything besides static on the frequency. So unless I am using the incorrect frequency or am not setting it up incorrectly, I have no clue what I am doing incorrect.

Don't even try and program that thing by hand. Get the USB programming cable for RS scanners, and download a free trial of Win97 from Software for RadioShack PRO-series (PRO-92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 99, 163, 164, 106, 197) and GRE PSR-series (PSR-500, 600, 300, 400) scanners.

When you get that far, I'll send you a file that has everything for Somerset, Hunterdon, Mercer, & the NJSP in it (just did my buddy's niece's 164 2 months ago).

You also need to verify what the firmware is in that scanner, as older versions would not trunk 500 MHz Motorola systems at all (if you just bought it, it might be up to date regarding this...).

Alright, Thanks for the information. I will probably go out and get this sometime this weekend. I will just throw you a private message once I have the cable hooked up and everything, and then you can send me the file I need.
