I own an XTS3000 Model III on VHF, is this compatable with the new ALMRS?
OK I have had scanners in my house since the early 70's when my husband and then later my oldest son were in the fire dept., and now that they are changing to the ALMR, I need advice on a scanner to get. I am going to "hint" that I want it for a christmas present. But if that doesn't work, I will buy it myself, so I need something that will work for the ALMR, but is not real expensive. I am living in North Pole now, but I was in the Delta Jct. area. Any suggestions?

I would like to recommend the Radio shack trunking scanner series. I have not used the Uniden/Bearcat scanners on the digital modes. I can say that my PRO-2096 has been a great scanner for about 2 years now. I have not came across any problems for basic mobile or base station use. My parents just recently purchased the PRO-96 (handheld) and are really liking it. The menu and functions are similar if not the same. The only down side is that I had to purchase the programming cable (Radioshack ~$10) and Win96 programming software ($30 registration) to be able to configure the scanners for ALMR. The software is easy to use (for me) and both the cable and software work on the handheld.
Not much of a real review, but I am happy with my PRO-2096 and for me... it works great for monitoring ALMR.

It probably is compatible as long as it has the right options installed, however, getting it programmed it's going to be the hard part, if not impossible....Moosemedic said:

Plus you'll never get the flexibility you get with a scanner.

I live out by 3 Mile gate and use the supplied antenna with CLEAR audio.
My parents are closer to NP out near Plack Road and use the suplied rubber duck with equal performance. That is the blessing of trunking.

I should add that when my parents are mobile, the rubber-duck still does just fine sitting on the cup holder near the center of the vehicle... not the most ideal location for most applications. Hope that helps

It's all a matter of picking, choosing and programming the towers with the best signal based on your location. Just like the "real" radios the ALMR users have, except their $5K+ radios does it for them. We have to manually program ours.akfrosty said:
