To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone have a fairly complete XPR software matrix that shows version history with Version Numbers and significant milestones? I have a handful of XPR Radios. 2 are XPR7550e radios. I'd like to get them updated as far I can while maintaining compatibility with CPS16. I don't have a problem with CPS 2.0 but the radios seem to hold their value a little better if they are CPS16 compatible. I've been told there is a "bridge" version that will work continuously with either CPS16 or CPS2.0. If that's true, that would be ideal. Otherwise the version just below it is where I want to be. Currently running R02.09.01.0001 and R02.09.00.0001 Thanks!

I believe you should stay on 2.09 and keep them on CPS 16. I know personally I won't buy an XPR UHF radio that requires CPS 2.0 and most people I know wouldn't. (Ham radio usage mostly on those)

Yeah I plan to stay at 2.09 unless a 2.10 "bridge" version really does exist. Just would like to be on the latest 2.09 minor release version and I don't really understand the version numbering scheme Moto uses for minor releases. Was hoping someone had a matrix to show this.

I don't know the reason for wanting the "latest" software you can have on it. Is the radio not doing something you need that you know an update would cure?

Just looking for any embedded buxfixes, enhancements or features. For instance I have a 5550e that had an really early version of 2.09 and I had to upgrade that to get RX Audio leveling and fix some other bug that affected transmit in digital mode. I guess it's really a matter of why not have it as up to date as possible from my perspective.

Ok sorry I couldn't be of more help. I have had in my time updates break as many things as they've fixed and then with Motorola it's easier to go forward than roll it back. If the goal is to stay on CPS 16, and you plan on having a larger market to sell, I'd not get into something that is gonna have to go to CPS 2.0. Just my opinion on dealing with the guys I've had dealings with. Good luck on your quest.

Well, by not updating to firmware that uses CPS2.0, you won't get 'talker alias'. I'm sure there are other improvements you won't get by neutering your radios at CPS Ver. 16 as well, but I don't have a matrix of what any bug fixes or improvements have been made post 2.0

What you lose by upgrading is a lot worse than gaining talker alias.

MotoTRBO CPS 16.0 is the very last of its kind as a week ago Motorola has now release a new generation of MotoTRBO CPS called CPS 2.0.
Here are some things you should know.

When you install CPS 2.0, it will install a parallel directory that has no affect on older versions of CPS Installations. Therefore you can continue to use the current version of CPS you have now with CPS 2,0.

This release will affect all Gen 2 devices (radios and repeaters) for all future firmware updates.
CPS 2.0 is backwards compatible for now with older CPS generation codeplugs ONLY if you have a version of MotoTRBO CPS installed. Its recommended you use CPS 16 for compatibility if you want the ability to continue to open all older archives with the very last firmware release of 2.09...

You can use both legacy MotoTRBO CPS and CPS 2.0 to program or open any codeplug versions there is if you have both older CPS and CPS 2.0 installed.
However note, if you save a codeplug in CPS 2.0 it can ONLY be opened up with CPS 2.0.
Firmware update to 2.10....
If you update your radio or repeater device to firmware ver 2.10.... you will ONLY be able to use CPS 2.0 from there on out for the rest of its days! You will NEVER be able to use older CPS that device ever again!
Only the firmware updating will force you to use the latest CPS 2.0. so its safe to use with older firmware and still go back to older CPS if you don't update the firmware.
Firmware 2.10...has no new features for the any device specifically BUT its does have some enhancements and bug fixes from previous versions.
If you don't like the CPS 2.0 software interface, you better NOT update to 2.10.. firmware. The CPS 2.0 software has LESS application features than the older versions. NO MORE drop and drag, or multiple instances of codeplugs in the same CPS session..you CAN copy paste from one CPS instance to another by opening up 2 windows of CPS 2.0 at the same time with different archives. IP site remote programming and Bluetooth radio programming is NOT supported with this CPS 2.0
Note that ONLY Gen 2 radios will be able to receive any future firmware updates past 2.10.... the subscribing radios will have to still be under a factory warranty or service package plan.. You may want to strongly consider to NEVER use CPS 2.0 if you have no new radios under a current Motorola factory warranty plan. Those of you that do, will someday have no choice but to get familiar with CPS 2.0 because the factory will force update your radio to this new generation CPS if your radio gets repaired at any Motorola radio depot facility. You can still load your older codeplug with CPS 2.0 but with this latest firmware 2.10....you MUST use CPS 2.0 for ever and ever! Any device archives saved with CPS 2.0 can only be opened up with CPS 2.0 as it saves it with a new extension .2 name.
In my personal opinion CPS 2.0 is very slow and different. It has less functionality than the previous CPS versions. Motorola has tightened up security with this release for online access using radio management. I would not force my radio to this firmware version unless I have no choice. It offers nothing more at this time other than to force one to learn a new programming language interface..Note that you will still need a 25 Khz band entitlement license for this CPS 2.0 and there are ways to possibly import/recover your licenses over to it..but good luck on that!

PS. NO MORE OUT OF BAND HAM HACKS! on High Split UHF radios and 900 Mhz radios with use of CPS 2.0!

Not even on a list of things I even need. Frankly everyone I talk to here locally is in the contact list. I don't use the radios for anything but simplex with the exception of 1 6550 I do occasionally get on a local DMR repeater. But that's pretty rare. If I need to know who someone is I'll ask a callsign if I don't recognize the voice. It's been over a year however since I used anything but the local TG on that repeater to be honest.

I know the locals I talk to. Last time I upgraded my contact list was 7 years ago. Our DMR repeaters aren’t on D-Marc, or Brandmeister.

Then bump up to 2.09(Gen2) or S01.17.09(6xx0 portables)or R01.12.17(Gen 1 mobiles) and be done with it.

Having used both 16 and 2.0, I really don't see what the big whine about 2.0 is. Both are equally ****ty when compared to just about anything else save for KPG-Dx software.

Have you used 2.0 to get either the 6580, 7580 or 5580 to the ham bands ? Yes they're both equally (as you said).
Also just for the record I am not looking for firmware. My stuff already works just the way I need it too. Thanks though for the tip!!

Yep me too. Every now and then I will add someone joining our group on 900MHz but other then that it's been a couple years since I did the VHF or UHF ones.
