If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

At work we use motorola 5500 dispatch consoles
the tones in the consoles are translated into codes, like 08DE or A295, i dont really understand why they dont just have the tones put into them in Hz, but i guess thats motorola for you.
So does anybody know how to find out what those tone codes translate into or how to convert a tone into that code?
we can manually encode tones as well but again requires that same 4 digit code

so like if i wanted to put in 1472.9-584.8 how would i find out what the 4 digit code for that is?
thanks

I just scanned through the 5500 console installation manual. There is no paging encoder built into the console system. Instead, the system has provision for connecting an external encoder.

What's critical to answer your questions is to know what brand and model encoder is installed in your system. Then we can begin to make sense of the codes that in turn generate pager tone signalling.

Now, before you try to tell me that the encoder is too in your system and that I'm full of hot air, please consider that you're an operator, not a tech. To you, it's all one neat package that performs all those different functions. And it sure does look that way. But that's not the case. A console like the 5500 marries a bunch of different components and systems into a (hopefully) seamless unit that does whatever you, the dispatcher, need it to do. Individual components that are CONTROLLED by a console include radios, repeaters, voting systems, encoders, decoders, wire lines, microwave links, etc. Each of these components can be from different suppliers so knowing what the components are is very important. There's lots more to it, but I think you begin to get the idea.

So, repeating myself here... Let's find out what make and model of paging encoder is used in your system.

The MCC5500 DOES support 2-tone paging and several other formats. The console code for 1472.9 and 584.8 is 0701

PM me your email and I can send you the translation guide for the 5500.

I humbly stand corrected. There is virtually no mention of the built-in paging encoder in the install manual. However, after downloading and reading through several other large documents, I found the charts in the system database manager for it.

It's complex, and figuring out the actual tones from the paging code is painful.
