If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Motorola HT1250 VHF radio and I've been having problems transmitting to our communications center. I have problems tx on channels with and without repeaters. I always get told I'm "unreadable, too much static, low modulation or cutting in and out."

My radio was programmed by a local guy who programs radios in our area, so I trust the programming. I also have the software myself and can program radios with basic knowledge, but I'm not that familiar with the software to know what to check to see if anything is wrong. I know the frequencies are correct.

Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions or could potentially take a look at my radio or codeplug.

Someone local with experience would be nice!

Thanks,

What you describe would not normally be associated with a programing issue. I would look for a hardware problem such as a band antenna, external microphone problem (if equipped), PTT button, etc.

A thorough check up on a service monitor is needed, to determine what the problem may be because it definitely sounds like a hardware issue.

a lot of people always pick up the portable by the Antenna BAD THING TO DO maybe the antenna is lose from the board?

That's a common issue.

A member here, mmckenna, explained to me that that's a big issue with the Jedi series. Not sure about the HT1250s, but the same principle applies... I know lots of firefighters (at least around here) have a habit of picking the radios up by the antenna or just kind of letting them hang out of their mouth by the antenna, and nobody ever thinks anything of it... But as we all know radios are pretty heavy, and I'm sure you could weaken up the connections.

That IS a common issue..

On most portable radios it WILL make the antenna connection in the radio fail. In the HT1250 series radios the antenna jack breaks away from the circuit board.

The radio's antenna is NOT a handle.. You do not like to be picked up by your head or arm, do you.

My usual comment to anyone I see picking up a radio by the antenna is "Don't pick it up by the handle. Did your mama pick you up by your handle??"

THEN I go on to explain how bad it is for the radio & antenna.

If I get a 'Yes' to the question of their mama, my next response is to tell them 'yeah, and look how you turned out!'

Is it just me, or was there a huge auction of HT1250 radios I missed?
There sure seems to be a lot of postings about that particular radio here lately.

Was this radio programmed around same time as the problems? Make sure you're not transmitting on low power. I'm not trying to insult your intelligence it's just something I do without realizing it.

Maybe an alignment? I don't know if it was the Waris or maybe we were doing something wrong, never abused them but we always had issues with our HT1250s. We'd send them in and they would always need a tune. We resorted to keeping HT1000s as backups until we got our XTS

I have a HT1250 and that's what we also used when I was with my volunteer fd. Everyone including myself had issues with our radios. Mine being my personal radio that I had bought myself was never abused like the ones that the FD had bought. I do know when we started having problems with ours it was usually just switching the antenna and things got better. Also ours was UHF where you are saying you are on VHF. One question I have do they have issues hearing you on the radios in the trucks? I know down here just listening on my scanner some of our local FD's have been having issues with there HT's on being able to communicate with the comms center. Believe it has a little bit to deal with the noise level in the atmosphere right now.
