• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm looking into buying a Minitor V programmer online so I don't have to wait for my local communication to come add/change/remove something or whatever may need to be done. I was looking online and I came across this one (Minitor V USB Programming Kit) its a USB Model (I don't have a 9 pin port PC) and before I buy it I wanted to see if anyone else has bought one like this and if it works correctly,

Any input would be great!

Thank You!

I've bought from there before. I was not pleased with what i received. Its just a home brew programmer made from a charger. It was quite flimsy and broke numerous times.

I don't have specific experience with that programmer, but if you don't have a serial port you can just get a serial to USB adapter. They are inexpensive and work fine once up and running. Depending on the OS sometimes they can be a pain to get installed correctly because a lot are made with "unauthorized" versions of a specific chip (called Prolific).

This would open up the option of getting a serial based programmer.

We bought this from them and use it daily here at the shop. It works flawlessly for us. the only thing we watch for is that the phono plug is fully inserted in to the back of the cradle. We have programmed well over 200 Minitor Vs with it and it still works fine.

The kit you are looking at gets mixed reviews. Some love it; some hate it.

We bought the Motorola kit. I use it on my Win7 laptop with several different USB to serial adapters. I did got get the Prolific chipset driver and have had no problems. Search here and on the batboard. There are lot's of threads on USB to serial problems and solutions plus recommendations on brand name adapters which should work from the start.

Yes, the Motorola programming kit costs a bit more but it's trouble-free once you get the adapter working properly with it.

There's a guy selling real Motorola kits on Ebay right now for $150 including shipping. Minitor V Programming Cradle RLN6360A Genuine Motorola | eBay

Thanks everyone!!! I wanted to get some background info on this before I went and bought it. All I'm looking for is a programmer that does what its supposed to do...But it won't break the bank!!!

SteveC0625: Your method is what my local communication company does as well as a communication buddy of mine with no issues!

P.S If anyone does some more research, I'm looking for programming compatible with Win 7

I too have bought and used this for my Minitor III, IV and V. It works great! It does work for Windows 7 as well.

If you're going to buy your serial to USB cable at Radio Shack, try the Gigaware model. I have been using one of these for a few year now for programming various scanners, 2 way radios a and a few other things, consistently without a single problem.
I tried a couple of cheaper sets off of Ebay and couldn't get them to work, at least not with everything I have to program (some would work on one thing and not the others).
It's a few bucks more, but does everything I need it to every time, and it comes with a 6 foot cable.

Thanks again all!!! Gonna go the correct route & buy this one (RLN6360 Minitor V Programming Kit) but going to buy my USB to Serial at my local RadioShack. Any suggestions on brands from there?
The Belkin cable also gets high marks. You may not find it at Radio Shack, however. They've gone so far down hill that I won't even go in there any more.

Amazon and Ebay are good sources if you shop by brand name.

I have found the Gigaware serial--> USB adapter to work great. They carry them at Radio Shack. I use it for a bunch of stuff, including pager and two way radio programming and have never had any issues with it.
That was after trying a number of others that may work on some equipment, and not on others. It cost a little bit more, but comes with a 6 foot cable and IT WORKS EVERY TIME!
