If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have just purchased a Motorola Pro 96 and am totally lost in how to program it to get Chesterfield County, Virginia. I have the control frequencies and info for talkgroups, but am having trouble understanding the book. What is a priority channel vs a control channel?
Can anyone talk me through it??????????????? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

thanks

The 96 is a little hard to program even with software. Your best bet is to get starrsoft.com software. Then you can SEE everything within each bank that needs to be programmed.

That statement is totally incorrect.

The PRO-96 is by far the easiest DIGITAL SCANNER to program!

The only reason someone could make the statement that it is difficult is that they have not bothered to learn how it is programmed or they have tried to program all 5500 channels and 16500 talkgroups without using copy, paste and Win96.

Maybe for you it's the easiest to program, but for a newbie, it will be quite confusing. When I got the 96, I was completely lost because up until then I only dealt with Unidens. Now that I know what's up and what's down, it's a breeze.

To answer the question directly since no one bothered to do that. For a trunked system, you need to program tha control channels. Priority channels, are channels or talkgroups that you set as a priority when scanning. That way if activity takes place on a different talkgroup or frequency, while listening to a seperate TG or freq, the scanner will automatically switch to the priority. You don't need these to program a trunk, like you're attempting to do.

Like some of the above posters said, get your self win96. It's well worth the few extra bucks.

Welcome to the board Ryan.

I agree with Larry, Vic and Mo regarding software for programming this or any trunk scan radio for that matter, as all are difficult to the new user. Starrsoft.com is a must for this radio. You’ll need a PC to scanner cable also.

In the meantime, use the info in RR Database (link above) and program your scanner as outlined in the attached Word file. BTW digital has nothing to do with programming, the radio automatically handles digital for you.
