• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

I'm looking to buy a Motorola xts5000 to scan trunked p25 police and fire and also for conventional use. Am I better off buying a model I or model iii radio. Does the model I radio decode nbc ID's like the model 3 does and have the same digital capability as the model iii radio does. Also if you have programming software for the radio then what is the point of having the full display keypad in the front of the radio for the model ii and model iii radios?

Thanks.

To answer things simply...a Model 1 is a non-display radio (so while it will decode IDs (it won't alias them) it has no way of displaying those things. There is also no way to access more than 48 channels/talk groups in the radio. To the best of my knowledge, a XTS5000 was never offered in a Model 1.5 (with display). As far as capabilities go...as long as the flash code supports the features...then yes they are just as capable as they are the exact same board with the Model 1 simply not having a display and keypad plugged into the board.

Main advantage to the Model 3 over the Model 2...the keypad allows you to directly dial numbers for signalling (want to page an ID or send a manual non-preprogrammed DTMF command). That's the real advantage to the model 3 (I don't own any Model 3's personally because I typically don't have that necessity outside of mobile applications).

Model 3 probably not necessary model 2 will work just fine. If you was considering a model 1 xts5000 I just get an XTS 1500 1.5 which just has a display with no keypad. Or 2500 1.5

Thank you, I will probably buy a model ii off of eBay and buy software to program it.
