MRP-2000 Pre-amplifier problems

Hey guys just had a question in regards to the effectiveness of the MRP-2000 Pre-amplifier. I recently purchased the pre-amplifier. I went to use it and I was getting nothing. In fact I lost all signal from anything. I live about a mile from a tower that broadcast the trunked system out here. I can pick it up without an antenna on my scanner. This was with the scanner hooked up properly or I assume. I connected my antenna to the antenna side and the radio on the radio side and it was on with a 9v battery inside it. I then turned it around and hooked it up backwards and was able to pick the system up but I lost anything that wasn't close and had a strong signal. I was wondering if I’m the only one that is having or had this problem and if there maybe something that I’m doing wrong. Just for information I have a Uniden 396XT. I just use a portable antenna with the scanner. Thanks for the future help
