I see that MSP has two sites fairly close to each other. Does anyone know why? I would figure that Mt Tom would be the prime site since it overlooks the city. I would like to know the reason why if anyone has facts on that..

Is one better than the other if monitoring from the MA/CT line?

I've only heard traffic on two frequencies when traveling in Berkshire County. The details are available at my website.

http://nf2g.com/scannist/ma_moto.html - click on State Police (it's the only system I have there right now).

Mt Tom is on the town line of several towns, however MSP has two sites listed---Mt Tom & Holyoke. My question is why the two sites, and where is the Holyole site?

ok i remember seeing that. That makes no sense. I've run trunker on the site before and got this granted it is a year old, but i think it is still accurate

MSP MT TOM ZONE 18
MAP=????2???
OPTIONS=nVdf
PLAN=8
DESCR=Type II NetWkd 97.3 Hz
THRESHOLD=50
DISPOSITION=abcbdbebfulynbpbsr
v852.2625,32,ffff,31
v857.7875,10f,ffff,1764
v858.7875,137,ffff,1826
a 859.7875,15f,ffff,0

As far as i know only one system out there. As far as I know there is no zone 103. I thought you could only have 48 sites on smartzone?

I think you can have more than 48 sites, but if I remember a training manual correctly, you can "name" them differently from the actual allowed so that an agency can inventory a site without getting two systems mixed up.... (that sounds a little confusing!)

Ok, checked some of my system manuals....and if anyone is interested...

SMARTNET-Single site/self contained trunking systm
Up tp 28 Channels-Digital and analog (mixed mode) supported
4000 Talkgroups
Supports Emergency calls and private calls

SMARTZONE-Bascially a SMARTNET system with 48 sites. Same features etc.

SMARTZONE OMNILINK-Links upto 192 SMARTZONE sites together.

PRIVACY PLUS-Consumer/business radio trunking system. Does not support most features that a Smartnet system does like emergency, dynamic regrouping etc. Smartnet is the public safety tunking system, privacy plus is business.

Holyoke's Two Sites

Mt Tom has a fairly large dead area over the Southampton/Westfield area.
I remember distinctly hearing that there was indeed a second MSP site on a tower located on Southampton Road which would put it lower to the ground thus eliminating the "mountain shadow" over Southampton that the primary Mt Tom site has... (The second tower is IN Holyoke as well)

I don't think it is active (yet?). When I run Trunker on the Mt Tom site, I do not get site 103 as a Neighbor. If it were linked to the Smartzone, it would show up that way.
