• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Is that a fact?, as I don't intend to sound rude or anything but your signature say's all comments may or may not resemble actual fact, and Any message posted constitutes opinion only.

§ 95.381 Voice obscuring features.
A grant of equipment certification will not be issued for any transmitter type that incorporates one or more voice scrambling or other obscuring features for any of the Personal Radio Services that provide for voice (telephony) communications on shared channels (see § 95.359), if the application for such grant is filed on or after December 27, 2017.

In other words, a radio that has the ability to run encryption would not be able to receive FCC Part 95J certification after Dec. 27, 2017. Before that, there were some FRS radios that had snuck through scrambling. FCC put a stop to that.
Since 95.381 covers all the personal radio services, including MURS, it would apply there also.

If you had a radio that had a legit Part 95J certification for use on MURS that came from the factory with encryption capability, then it would appear there is no rule against using it.
But, I doubt there are many radios out there that would have that.
I'm sure that wouldn't stop someone from taking a non-95J certified radio and loading it up with AES-256, but then that's not legally a MURS radio, is it?

In this case, it *is* a fact. Per MURS regulations.

As always, read the FCC regulations for a radio service you are interested in, before you get involved with said radio service.

Been hearing someone around here on MURS channels using what sounds like Motorola Securenet encryption (only a "whooshing" noise with any traffic).

Good point -- I know I've heard the Dakota Alert driveway alarms, as well as the Garmin Astro dog trackers, too. Some voice users at retail stores as well. MURS seems to be slowly expanding in use around here.

The audio sample of the Securenet encryption seems to line up to what I'm hearing, but I'll have to pay closer attention to see if I hear the beep at the end of TX, and maybe dust off the SDR. :)

Are you hearing a 6 KHz chirp at the end of transmission?

Not sure yet -- but I'm going to be listening specifically for that end chirp next time!

I'll check back in once I hear more traffic... seems like they've been popping up every couple of days or so on various MURS channels (but I'm also not monitoring 24/7).
