Hello, here is my new discone that I finished about a week ago, this one has bigger dimensions than a R/S discone, but I built everything from aluminum stock, alum welding rods, from an old drill press.( I also cut out the disk from 1/2" aluminum and the cone block with a jigsaw.
Everything is fastened together with S/S hardware(set screws, ect.)
I did use a so-239 connecetor(what was handy at the time,as I am only concerned with 118-150,and 225-400Mhz)Military air band.
-sorry the pic quality is bad,as it is a rainy day here.
This antenna knocks the socks off of my other discone projects!

BTW-I did use a "bondo filled skoal can"for an insulator!
ha,ha-it's all that came to my mind at the time, but it WORKS!
painted black, only you and I will ever know!

First, that discone looks great!

I notice that you also are using one of my all time favorite antennas, the RS 20-176 Scanner Antenna; and using where it works best, up in the air, away from anything.

Is that a DB Products up on the top of the tower?

Loumaag hit the nail on the head. That discone is AWESOME lookin. That is the great thing about this hobby, the chance to always try something new and to build it however you want it!

Nobody in the world will ever know what you used as an insulator with it way up in the air like that. And if it works who cares! :)

Awesome Antenna and install!

Thanks!
No,the VHF transmitting antenna is another homebuilt that I made for my MURS base.It really kicks!
It is a two stack exposed dipole array,1&3/4"support pipe,3/8"solid alum dipoles, homemade wiring harness. The SWR is 1.2:1, on 151.820Mhz(see details about this one)at:

http://hometown.aol.com/teraycoda/myhomepage/photo.html

I tell you,it is the absolute best antenna that I have ever used for MURS!
No,I have'nt encountered any problems with the discone being next to the dipole array,as my MURS base is only 2 watts, and we(family)use it quite a bit!

The rat-shack ground plane is used for an old crystal realistic scanner,pro47 that I picked up at a yard sale for 10.00.(I still like nostalgia in this digital age!)

Welding Rods

Are the 3/16 welding rods very flexible? How about the 3/16 copper ground wire you used on the previous versions?

I PM'ed you as well...nice discones!! My wife thanks you for giving me the bug, now I have another project to stay out of her way!

Discone Antenna (pic on your website)... More info?

I saw your Discone antenna that's based on the RS Discone's dimensions...
I don't suppose you have any dimensioned drawings I could get?
I'm new to scanners, just got my first one (out of necessity... longish story).
I like the bigger one (with the skoal insulator) but right now it would be too big
of a project for my frenzied schedule.

Anyway, if I could find out the critical dimensions I could build one and save a
few dollars (I probably have everything but the connectors in my "Laboratory"

:) BTW, bi-metal hole saws are a great way to cut aluminum (or other mat'l) disks.

I really don't plan to make the radio scanner I bought into a hobby, but
it may be hard to resist temptation. I will be spending a lot of time just
learning to use it (Radio Shack Pro-92 bought on eBay for about $50)
