hey guys,
spent most of the day reading every topic in the NJ forum....very helpful. that alone eliminated 90% of my questions.
i would appreciate some help with my first scanner....uniden BC296D:

i am really only intrested in listening to the NJSP frequencies (partly because i am in the application phase for the state police).
so i entered the 4 control frequencies into the scanner (bank 8 channels 701-704). i made sure i programmed the bank as trunked, typeII, and control channel only. i then push search and i am pretty sure i am hearing most of the conversations in bank 8. first question: is this rite? or do i need to do anything else to listen to troop B???

also, if i know a talkgroup id# (the irvington undercover troopers), how do i put that in, and under what bank should that go in?

any help would be appreciated.
thank you.

Well you can put that TG anywhere you want. It just needs to be the bank in which you put the control channels. Since I don't own a Uniden, you will have to see the manual on how to program the TG. It is DEFINETELY in there.

Hope This Helps You, :D

I have read other post to where people only put in the Control Channels to "save space" they say. I put in all the frequencies associated with that system. If you have the room put in as many of the other frequencies as you can in that bank. Not going to hurt anything.

I do all of my scanning by CC-only. Just make sure that if you're going to do this, that your scanner is set to CC-only mode!

I monitor three local TRS's that have 20 freq's each. Rather than put 60 freq's in my scanner, it was a lot easier to put in 12 control channels, and go on about my business.

P.S. stvnd53, we had a guy join our volunteer FD last year that is from Newton, NJ. Small world.

If you have a list of talk groups you want to listen to, you have to program them into the ID Scan List for the bank you have the system programmed in. Your manual explains how to do this. If you find one while in the ID SEARCH mode, when it appears on the screen, just hit the "E" (Enter) button and it should automatically go in.

Just remember, when your scanner is in the ID SEARCH mode, you will hear all active talk groups in the system. If you only want to hear the ones you have programmed into the ID Lists, it has to be in the ID SCAN mode. You can change these modes by pressing and holding the TRUNK button until either ID SCAN or ID SEARCH appears on the screen. This does not have to be done when the unit is scanning the trunked bank. You can do it at anytime while the scanner is scanning all of the banks.

This is how it works on the 785D and I really don't think the 796D is that much different.
