Okay, but when you hear them talking to each other, you would hear static or digital noise while Jeff is talking and then the other person loud and clear. Next race someone needs to program in the common channel and see what they hear.

Ok, I suppose, unless of course car-to-car was in analog...

I'm out. I give up.

If I'm not mistaken, it's Diversified Electronics that has the license on the frequencies and they do all the programming of the radio equipment. If you will notice, all the radio's in use are Motorola. No MA/Comm, no Johnson, nobody but Motorola.

I'll be at the Atlanta race March 7-9, so I should be able to confirm the freqs (I'm normally there for qualifying, so that way I lock on to their known frequencies and see what comes up).

People tried using all of the published frequencies as well as the back up frequencies. Over the course of the 4 hour race people were trying everything.

It's just odd to me that his was the only channel no one could hear.

If you have the right frequency, and lets just say that they are using digital or encryption, or even both, then i would bet you would be hearing at the very least some noise of some sort.

Try monitoring a digital frequency on an analog scanner... all you get is some garbled mess of nothing... but regardless it still breaks squelch. I've never attempted to monitor encrypted channels, but i would venture a guess to say that they are probably going to be the same way. Noise on a given frequency is noise on a given frequency and it will be received by your scanner, it just may not be decoded/interpreted properly/coherently.

Yep...

I know someone that was at Daytona and they said they heard the 24 just fine on their SC230.

I talked to a lady today that tried all 4 backup channels and could only hear little bits of the crew chief and mostly silence.

Normally I wouldn't be so curious about the situation if so many people hadn't reported the same difficulties.

Very odd.

If you are at the race ... stop by one of the Track Scan trailers ... they are the all white trailers with big yellow headset graphics ... They have frequency listing sheets for 5 bux and they are extremely accurate. They also have very knowledgable staff that can answer any questions.

They are a client of mine and I will ask them if the 24 or any other teams are using ecrypted/digital.

I talked to a couple of people who took their scanners to the Track Scan trailer and the people working in the trailer were unable to figure out was going on and so many people that rented scanners approached them that they were wishing they could just put up a sign telling people in advance that they didn't know why no one could hear the 24 team.

I'll try and get some info on Monday. Yikes .... I'm sure they were hammered with rental customers if there was indeed an issue.

I enjoy using my Pro-96 at the tracks because you can put in the ctcss/dpl. No hearing others on the same frequency.

From the www.nascanner.com website (for 2008):

24 Jeff Gordon 467.0625 465.8625 468.2125

My source was not aware of the issue. Will post more if I hear anything. Could it be possible they have new radios that do digital too? Maybe they were on those?

okay...........I work for a nascar team and we are experimenting with the digital radios...the ones that teams are starting to use are the Motorola XPR6500/6550.....there is a digital channel to go to to talk so no one else can hear....it cannot be picked up with a digital scanner, but the signal is not "encrypted" in the normal sense......the digital channel can be used for "race practice" only....it cannot be used in the race as NASCAR has to be able to monitor all transmissions......and on the analog channels.....everyone uses ctss/dpl ....90% of the time, teams use their primary channel......at certain tracks, there is alot of interference and some have to use the back up channels, but not very often.....oh.....Hendricks, Roush, and Gibbs use Racing Electronics.........DEI, Gibbs Nationwide team, and NASCAR use Racing Radios......those are just the main ones.....

According to Motorola, it's TDMA. But, as I mentioned before and as unklefester says, NASCAR has to be able to monitor them, so those transmissions have to be analog. Have a feeling in the future that all teams AND NASCAR will probably switch over.

I wouldn't count on that. NASCAR tends to rule with an iron fist and i don't really think they'd want to move in that direction.

Great info. Thanks again. I am still wondering if people were able to scan the 24 at Fontana.

I don't think so, when some teams tried to switch to Nextel, they shot them down quick. I also think some also tried to use digital radios, and they shot that idea down really quick too.
