I posted this over in the Oregon forum, but perhaps some folks here would also know. A few US and Canadian Navy ships are currently docked here in my hometown of Portland, Oregon as part of our annual Rose Festival event. This annual Naval visit is a tradition that goes back many decades. Anyway, I've been a monitoring enthusiast here off and on since the early 1970's, but I've never thought to search for Navy activity during Rose Festival. I thought it might be fun to plug some channels into my brand new BCD396XT and see what I can hear. I've got all the VHF Marine channels programmed, but I don't really know where to begin with the Navy stuff though. Would any of their comms even be in the clear? Anyone have any freqs I might try? Is there ever any military police traffic that isn't encrypted? What about Coast Guard comms outside of the marine VHF channels?

Thanks a bunch for the help!

Much of my US Navy findings have been [Analog and P25] in [Conventional, EDACS and Motorola] various modes.

Trunk, Conventional etc.

Search
380-400, 406-420, 457-459 and 467-468 Mhz

As for the Canadian Navy, I have only seen them use VHF Marine [don't skip over the International Channels]

I work in the Coast Guard command Center in Warrenton, OR, which overall is responsible for the comms for Rose festival. Most of the frequencies that we are using are encrypted, so you will not be able to hear anything on those frequencies. However, there are some unencrypted comms on 21A (157.05 MHz), 23A (157.150 MHz), VHF Ch 81A (157.075 MHz), 83A (157.175 MHz), and 123.075 MHz. Most of which will be on 83A, which we primarily use for a communications guard with the USCG Auxiliary, since they are not authorized to use encrypted comms.

As for what the Navy is using, I'm not sure, but im sure it is encrypted as well.
