VP-94!!

I remember them. They used to deploy to NAS Barber's Point, Hawaii, when I was stationed there. They used to load up their P-3s with all the junk avionics they could find, then write the stuff up when they got there. They could draw good parts out of Supply and turn in their junk stuff. They got working avionics, and we got a bunch of dogged out radios that would take MONTHS to troubleshoot and repair. If you happen to go to the airshow, and see someone walking around in a VP-94 hat, punch them in the nose for me, will you?

Do you know what frequency is used for the base hospital/ambulance. I have been trying to find it for years.

Base Hospital? All they have is a 0730-1600 Clinic with absolutely no Emergency Services at all.

Ambulance- The ambulance is Plaquemines Parish 1897. It used to be that the Belle Chasse ambulance would respond out there but the new Base C.O. decided that they wanted a dedicated truck located on base. So Plaqeumines put in and won the bid for it so weve been stuck out there for a year. Living conditions are horrible, have to stay in a 6x6 room at the clinic.

As far as Frequencies:
Plaquemines Dispatch: 154.445 (1897 is rarely dispatched on here though, as all base personelll are told to call the base firehouse for all emergencies)
Firehouse Dispatch: 139.500 (This is how the Base firehouse dispatches 1897 if they didnt turn off the radio, if so it reverts to the Parish dispatching us)
If it is a flightline emergency then they will switch to Base Channel 2 140.100.
Another frequency they will use is 155.805 for going enroute to scene/hospital and item/times.
Really we are a horrible service to listen to...

And wouldn't you know I have to work the fire station this weekend. Oh well. Maybe next year.

You dont want to do that, next year is the Thunderbirds since they rotate Blues/Thunder each year. For whatever reason the Thunderbirds dont draw a good crowd here.

Thats what you get for working AIMD and not a real squadron. I've been to Barbers Point before, done the same thing, infact we did that at all Base Aimd's we could find. Worked great for us, not so good for you. As far as punching them, well, any preferable rank/rate you want me to punch? I know alot of them over there.

Have you been able to take a scanner on the grounds of that base after 9/11? I called base security this past monday to ask them if they will allow people to bring scanners and the person I spoke to said no and he added, "don't get caught with that in your car" as well.

Landman- If you happen to remember who you talked to please let me know. There is no regulation prohibiting the use/possession of scanners and the like on the base.
I lived on the base for 4 years as active duty Marine Corps and now provide EMS there on occassion. I will personally call the Security Chief and talk to him as soon as he returns from lunch. If needed i can also provide you with name and number for him as well.

While i lived there i had 5 scanners in my room and they were never an issue/had one in my car and god only knows how many times i got pulled over on that base, and it was never an issue then either.

I didn't get to pick my orders coming out of A school. They sent me to the entertainment mecca of the universe, NAS LeMoore, Ca, for APX-72 Intermediate Repair School, and from there to IMA, NAWS Pt. Mugu, CA. I did "try" to go to an F-18 squadron after my tour at Pt. Mugu. The detailer had a billet there. I called up the Maintenance Master Cheif, introduced myself, told him I was considering taking orders to the squadron, but I wanted him to guarantee me the chance to go to Troubleshooters. I wasn't taking O-Level orders if I was going to spend my boat time changing black boxes on a dark, cold, rainy, cold, dark, rainy flight deck. I wanted to be up there during flight ops if I went. He told me, actually very politely, that he wouldn't promise me squat. So I took the orders to VP-1 out of Barbers. It was an I-Level billet that counted as sea duty. I listened to all the squadron guys piss and moan about us getting holidays off, and not working every weekend. But, you know what? When we were on deployment, and they sent a couple of P-3s to Australia, along with PAX, how many of us AIMD folks do you suppose got to go? All in all, being I-Level turned out pretty well for me. I do it full time now for the largest heavy lift helicopter company in the world. And I get a chance to work an actual airframe, from time to time, as well. I have no complaints.

ppems, if you find out that scanners will be allowed, please let me know.
They may have different rules when the public at large is on the base.

Landman- Spoke to the PM watch commander, she didnt have a clue what a scanner was, told me she didnt know why a computer scanner wouldnt be allowed. After explaining to her what it was, she defered the question to the Security Chief, who is unavailable until tomorrow. Ill try back then and let you know. If i happen to get a run tonight and transport to town i will swing by the base myself and get a definate answer.

Just figured I'd post a follow up to the N'awlins Air Show. Went on Sunday. Had a good time. Took 2(two) scanners and a 2-meter radio to the show and had no problems getting through security. Since 911, I've been to Barksdale, Houston (Ellington), Keesler, NAS New Orleans, and Lafayette air shows with scanners and have had no problem with security. They just want you to turn them on and show that they work. Am going to see Thunderbirds this coming weekend in Lafayette, La. Have fun!!!

Well, I work in the clinic for EMS every otherweek. I bring a scanner and my own VHF radio with me. The base ambulance only responds to flightline emergency. They transmit on base ops and flightline frequency. Also, PPEMS, the accomidations are not that bad! The EMS service in this parish is not that bad!!
