I am trying to hear NCHP, I am in Bryson City, NC (for vacation) but I literally have heard nothing on this site all day. Do they not use the digital system in western NC? It says there is a TG:

52202cbeaDTrp G Dist 6TROOP G DIST6 Swain, Macon, Clay, Cherokee, Graham Cos Law Dispatch
Is NCHP still dispatched by the local sheriff frequency in some areas? So bizarre, I get the site fine, it locks onto the control channel but haven't heard even ONE TG all day.

Thanks

Troop G is normally highly active, especially since the way Newton patches their TGs. Double check you're receiving the site correctly, depending on the scanner, check your service types, makes sure they're activated

Should I have "Site Trunking" checked for the G4? Thank you for your help!

For Troop F all districts do not always use their single assigned talkgroup. They have the ability to combine them from what I've seen. In other words you may hear District 5 cars being dispatched on District 2 Talkgroup. I suspect it's the same for G. I suggest adding all Troop G talkgroups to your scanner. You should start hearing them after that.

So, I have been travelling around west NC for memorial day weekend, my question is: if there are no troopers cars in the area of the tower, I probably won't hear traffic off that site correct? Maybe that is my issue, there are no radios hitting off the tower while I am listening.

Especially since G is dispatched by Newton (same as F)

You say you haven't heard anything 'on this site'. Which site(s) are you monitoring? There are 3 in Swain County and depending where you are, you may be able to get sites from other counties. NCSHP will definitely be on Viper there.

So, should I be able to hear highway patrol on the Murpy site at all times? I was able to pick up the Murphy site while on my way to Blairsville, GA and I have not heard any traffic on that site at all. Should that site pick up some kind of traffic? I have confirmed all settings from the Radio , Reference Database and they are all correct. Now, is it JUST the highway patrol on this system as of now? Perhaps that is why there is no traffic.

It could also depend on if a trooper is connected to that site. If you have another site in the area that has good connection, switch that site on and see if anything changes.

Should be plenty of other traffic on any one site other than SHP… SHP represents a small number of users compared to overall. Statewide they do odd dispatching depending on the comm center. HP Raleigh multiselects while they seem to patch districts together out west.

It’s possible there’s no affiliated radios on that TG on that site, and could be the reason you’re not hearing anything.

Great, I can finally hear something. It's because the only thing that is active on the site I am monitoring is one talkgroup! Seems like everything is analog around here. Thanks for everybodys help!

Truthfully HP cars are so spread out sometimes you’ll only have one working per county, so the likelihood of any given tower being active can be pretty low.

Fun thing about a Simulcast, I can listen to my district and the 3 surrounding 😉 if the bands are open enough, I can listen to Trp G.

...and at times only 1 for a 2-3 county area.

So I have noticed that I don't hear traffic stops with location and plate info. Do they just not broadcast them over the air?

Usually don't broadcast or announce it at all. They may call in for info if their MDT is down which is usually after the stop has occurred, but otherwise they don't notify dispatch when they're making a stop.

So tagging on to this thread. I have a Uniden SDS 100 scanner and if i create a favorites list with all NCSHP troops, a,b,c,d,e,f,g and then stay on the list while traveling across NC. As i progrees from east to western NC. I should be good to hear radio traffic in the areas that i travel?

Yes but also remember, sites are a must! I recommend getting the GPS puck and setting it up so you don't have to worry about quick keys
