Faced with decreasing activity on my Pro 2004, I finally invested in a digital scanner, the Radio Shack Pro-2096.

I am trying to input the frequencies and am getting somewhat confused. I signed up for WIN 96 and typed in the tags, frequencies and mode for the state police, then uploaded them to the scanner.

But of the dozen or so frequencies I inserted, I have only heard activity on one - the one for Troop E (151.325). For example, I put in 152.63 for Troop F (which covers my region), and identified it as Motorola, but absolute silence.

I fear I am doing something wrong, probably due to my sheer ignorance of all these new concepts. I do not understand how to put in talk groups, I do not know how to determine what Fleet Map is necessary, and I am confused about how to program a frequency like those in Manchester that look like this: 0128 01-000

Yes these are a lot of questions, but if I can just get Troop F to come in I will be happy for now.

Thanks, Chemisse

Okay, I JUST heard something on that channel, just after I posted. *blushes*

So I will shift my question. If I have that one frequency programmed for Troop F (actually 2, there are 2 for that troop), will I hear everything that is aired to and from Troop F (assuming unencrypted) or do I need to do something else, like program talk groups or identify the fleet map?

NHSP uses conventional (meaning non-trunked) digital frequencies. On the Radio Shack digital scanners, you should have them programmed as "FM" mode, not Motorola. The Motorola mode is for Motorola trunked systems. Fleet maps and such only apply to trunked systems.

Since you say you live in Troop F territory (Grafton and Coos Counties according to the map here), I doubt that you will pick up any trunked public safety systems up there. The only trunked public safety systems in the state I know of are Manchester, Nashua and Goffstown (somebody correct me if I'm wrong), and you are probably too far away from them to pick up their signal. I can barely pick up Manchester, and I'm only a few miles outside the city.

To answer your question, I can't pick up Troop F here, but if you program both frequencies listed in the database as Troop F Dispatch, and the signal is strong enough where you are, you will hear all of the dispatch activity (unless they are using encryption, as you said). You may also want to look in the database here for other frequencies used in your area.

You're not the only one having trouble w/ NHSP troop F. I have a pro 2096 and live in grafton county, not far from twin mountain to be exact (troop F headquarters). There are no trunked systems in this part of the state so you'll want to program your scanner in FM mode (as stated above). As for troop F freqs...you said you had two. I'm not sure which ones you have but try these: Troop F LP North - 155.910 -this ch. is analog. Troop F primary - 152.630 (APCO25) and you might wanna try Troop F link of Mt. Washington - 462.450 (analog). Hope this helps, but like i said, i've had problems getting Troop F, their conversations just drop suddenly, it's weird.

If you have any other questions about freqs. around Grafton County, let me know.

- Stay safe.

That helped a lot!

Thanks! I changed all the state police to FM and am having good luck with reception of them.

I have done a bunch of reading about all this but the responses here last night really cleared up my confusion. I guess I was thinking all digital systems were trunked as well. Now I am realizing all this is much easier than I had thought; old frequencies are working for me again, but they are showing up as digital transmissions. And the trunked systems I did want (Manchester & Nashua) I was able to import into the computer program, then upload to the scanner, so I didn't really need to know how to define fleet maps or any of that!

So I am up and running with the new scanner. Thanks again.
