I don't think FEMA has pre-existing repeaters scattered all across the area...

They do currently? Or they did? I understood that much of that infrastructure was replaced by cellphone, satphone, and portable repeaters years ago.

I too have a list of FEMA region repeaters through out the u.s. but was never able to confirm if they were really in use,or if all hell had to break loose somewhere before any would make noise?
I tend to think their stuff is in mothballs probably tucked away in a ...trailer?

The times I've dealt with FEMA, they've always gone with someone from the area and used the local comm system. I'm sure they have trailers full of gear if needed, but I'd be surprised if they still have a national network existing.

Yeah, you're probably right. I was making a joke using "trailer" to see if anyone would connect it to all of the mobile home communities they set up in New Orleans. My bad!

Region 5 Fema does a test of there system every week and they talk to the other states.FEMA does use there radio system to do this.Indiana has a EOC and they have a radio in there EOC at the Indiana Goverment Center that can talk to FEMA on there frquencies.

Is there an echo in here? I know they use sat comms and HF comms - but you are saying the Indiana EOC talks to FEMA in Chicago and the other state points through a relay of repeaters in between? Nut uh.

Yes they do have a radio in the EOC and they check in with the other states once a week and they do use other freqs including vhf, uhf, and HF..The Repeater Dale is shared with other states that make up Region 5 and they are heard in the EOC with no problems when they talk to Chicago direct via radio.

I didn't say they don't have a radio. I said they don't have VHF repeaters spread all across the region to relay back and forth to the EOC's. And those states do not talk direct to FEMA Chicago via VHF.

Here's an idea (taking a play from your book) -- why not check the Safe-T talkgroup listings for Marion County?

Dale, They do have a VHF repeater in the 139Mhz area that they do use in the indianapolis area. This is a repeater and all the states have a repeater to use when they are calling Chicago. They also use the same repeater for local traffic with in that state which is in Region Five..This is federal and has nothing to do with our Local safe-t network.I have checked safe-t and is is very funny that you should ask that becuase The State of Indiana does have Marion County MECA talkgroups in there safe-t radios and the Federal Gov also has Safe-t and MECA talkgroups

You're saying the 139MHz repeater in Indianapolis allows users from the entire state of Indiana to talk back and forth? And then it also allows them to talk directly to other states?

How'd you get your ham license?

Might you be talking about the HF Shares Program vs VHF/UHF ??
or the Telephone System [NAWAS] ???
