Re: Gema

They use the SouthernStink, er, I mean SouthernLink system that's the same kind of system as Nextel that uses iDEN technology. Bottom line, ya' ain't gunna hear nuthin'.

Richmond County still has low band assigned to them on this frequency (I saw the radio at a remote site at the base of a water tower when I was there). Columbia County installed an antenna on their tower at their new EOC a couple of years ago. The assistant EMA director told me that it was a GEMA requirement for them to still have low band capability. I keep it programmed in all my radios "just in case" :)

Stn Mtn --

The Low band base on Stn Mtn is still on the air --

Check the FCC listings for this Freq in GA almost every local government entity has a license, but unfortunately like most things these days, if it's not 800Mhz it''s not worth supporting -- So many of the sites are no longer active ...

I just took a GEMA SAR class last weekend. The instructor said in most cases they are still using 45.56 for line of sight and non repeated applications ie localized searches and "minor disasters". He did refer to SouthernLink which is the old Nextel IDEN network. We had a tornado here in Helen many years ago. GEMA came in and handed out IDEN radios to team leaders and officers for communications to areas outside of the damaged area for the FIRE/EMS and LE repeater being out of commission. Apparently they didn't work to well.

I have a very good friend that works network architecture for ATT wireless. He was telling me about the Feds buying up the old IDEN networks. He thinks there some spooky X-Files stuff going on with it but I think it was Uncle Sam taking advantage of a established semi-secure communications network that was about to be abandon.

GEMA - Negative

Weather freq's are about all that is available. There is a low-band freq in the 45-Mhz range on which weather statements are patched and broadcast on.

GEMA uses Southern Link & Nextel which are IDEN networks and cannot be monitored.

You might check for your local county E.M.A. freq's but for the state, we're out of luck.

Take care & happy scanning!

SouthernLink is not the same as NexTel. SouthernLink is the Southern Companies (i.e. Georgia Power) system. Works like NexTel, but their own network.

Well Nextel has declared that in 2010 iDEN will no longer be supported. I wonder what they are going to do then? I know that iDEN is a Motorola operating system but who knows. The Southern Company might just keep it going.

NexTel is gone, it's now Verizon and from what I understand, they have their own network (most likely the old NexTel net).

When did Sprint sell Nextel to Verizon?

As far as /\/\ dumping Iden, it's not the first time they screw customers while dropping support. Look at how many options they offer for mobile 900mhz type II radios?
