Hello all,

Back on 12/26/07 I took a ride over to Petersburg Pass, NY and the hairpin turn on Route 2 east heading out of North Adams, MA. I have several loggings, but I am not sure who they are. I was hoping some people out there could help me identify these stations so I may add them to my master log. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Wow, that is some long distance to be picking up Haverstraw/Stony Point on 155.595. The PL is certainly correct, but I'm skeptical. If you were indeed picking that transmitter up, you would certainly hear Rockland's countywide channel on 154.725 with 151.4 PL. I see you heard activity on that frequency, but the PL doesn't match. That transmitter has some serious prorogation due to its height and surrounding terrain. I've picked it up 5/5 some 80 miles away with a crappy mobile scanner and not so hot antenna.

Thanks to everyone who helped out with the identifications. I was really surprised on some of the stations I was picking up. I was using a PRO-97 receiver with a Radio Shack Magnetic Mount scanner antenna at both locations. I wish I had more time to spend monitoring some of these channels; it was more like a 'sprint' to log as much as I could.

I know that I will be going back to these, and other locations in the near future.

We should coordinate a joint expedition some day. I can do mobile trunktracking in addition to regular scanning and searching. An ideal spot would have free wireless Internet access and lots of elevation.

Mt. GreyLock and "Florida" aka Hairpin Turn have been GREAT locations to
work GMRS and Amateur back into Boston in years past on Portable.

Gotta make a road trip with Trunker sometime this Spring.

Ahhhh yes, Mt. Greylock...

When I was younger my father, older brother & myself would ascend Mount Greylock every June, August & September with the rest of the W2SZ/1 'expeditionary forces' for the ARRL VHF/UHF amateur radio contests. It always amazed me what kind of distances they could work, even in the microwave bands. It especially helped out if 'ductinig' was occuring. I haven't gone in years, though...

The last I heard, the road up Mt. Greylock was going to be closed for two years or more while it was to be re-built, all the way up to the summit. I don't know if it will be opened by this summer or not. On my way back through North Adams from the hairpin turn, there was a warning sign that the Notch Road to the summit was closed.

Greylock is great, except that it's a real RF 'dump' up there. Lots of transmitters on lots of frequencies, every time I tried using a scanner it would get desensed.

Dave, from time to time I have brought my laptop out with me and I find that the greater the elevation, the less chance of finding a reliable WLAN. Even when I go to Bald Mountain for work (which has houses all the way up to the tower road), I can't find a 'good' WLAN to get into. I can't afford to get one of those broadband laptop cards for my computer, either. I'll drop you a line with my 'typical' monitoring locations.

Well, the Internet access would be useful for quick lookups from the site, but it isn't indespensable.

I would suggest if you are planning to take the trip up to MT. Greylock, or any other high RF area, do it late night, post 10 or 11pm. Most of the transmitters, praticuly paging transmitters, tend not to be active late at night. I could work 146.91, on greylock after midnight in Boston Gov't Center/ and Back Bay areas. Durring the day, forget it!

That isn't practical for the mountain tops that are located in state parks (like Greylock and Equinox up in Vermont). They close at night.
