Good day, my brother in law who is blind and mentally challenged listens to his scanner all the time. However, two weeks ago his mother moved into a home and he moved in with us. I'm not into scanners per say, but I can read instructions. I can get the weather etc but the local fire/police/etc are dead. Since we live on a mountain in the woods, as opposed to the town he was in, I'm wondering if I need a better antenna? It currently has the short factory one now.
Also, for reference, we have a cellfi booster because we have little signal up here. So....how much of a range does this thing have and should I get an outdoor antenna??

Any other idea's??

Thank you.

What county and state was he in, and what county and state is he in now? We need to see what's listed in the database for the new area of residence. Also, the scanner in question is analog only and will not do any digital or trunking and will not work on anything above 512Mhz.

Since we all can't read minds, :) you have to let us know what county and state your trying to get.

Most likely your area is digital trunked and that radio is just analog non trunked. Until you let us know where we don't know.

Broadcastify his old location radio channels via internet.. Add the locals to the scanner.

Thanks for the replies guys. Funny, never even thought of mentioning country, etc, lol!!
So, We're in Nova Scotia Canada. He moved from the annapolis valley, to my place on English mountain, about 10 miles or 15 minute drive and a height increase of about 800ft or so.

Inputting the same channels he listened to before. Why aren't they still there after just being unplugged at the old house and plugged in at the new???
So far I can get fm radio etc but actual radio chatter from departments is gone or "less". Not even sure how often it went off before but there seems to be nothing now.

One thing I noticed is that he was turning the squelch up all the way, I backed it off until it just turned off the static to allow scanning. He doesn't understand what the squelch does so I have to keep checking that he didn't turn it up again.

One plan, is to plug it into a power source in a vehicle and drive back down town to ensure I have the right channels. Once I have that, move up the mountain some and stop and listen there for a while and then eventually try it at home.....whew...whole lotta running around, good thing I'm retired, lol!

So, let me try all that first (unless someone has a better idea) and then if I lose everything coming up the mountain, I'll try an outdoor antenna?? Also, any specific antenna I should look for/get??

Thanks again
Jim (aka XM-672530 in my cb days of the 70's lol)

First of all, what frequencies are you talking about , second would be, did he move out of range? Sometimes ten miles can make a big difference.

Thank you, this is what I loaded in for frequencies. Pretty much radio silence. When I get a minute I'll run it down the mountain and see if I get more there. Then I think I'll need a bigger/outdoor antenna. Any preferences in external antennas??

Hi. just wondering are you on the North (valley side or the water side) or South Mountain? Reason I'm asking is if you on Bay of Fundy side
you may not pick the valley all that well. In that case you might want to look at monitoring Colchester County, Cumberland County and / or Albert & Westmoreland Counties in New Brunswick.

I'm on the south mountain (above Kentville, Tupper Lake) All the same frequencies he had before when he lived in centreville, now, silence. There is basically no cell service here so I have a cellfi booster. Even with the booster, I only have reception in one room. (all phone calls must be made in the sunroom) So, perhaps all reception sucks here? I'm going to start experimenting and see what I come up with.
Thanks for all the help/suggestions guys!

Try all the ancient frequencies again, but this time with the cell booster at Off…
It is possible that the cell booster “wipes out” the receiving on the scanner, if the signals you are trying to receive are faint.

Have you tried monitoring the weather channels? Also try programming in frequencies 161.650 and 161.775 those are
continuous coast guard broadcasts. your close enough to try 119.5 CFB Greenwood Tower.
At least you'll know if it's receiving okay.
