Need software advice

Ok I have decided on the btc-15. Now for programming software. Scannersoft.com has a bundle package with full version of scan control for $259. Was wondering what is the better & easier to use software between scan control and the butel arc-15 software? Also will the programming cable that is sent with my scanner work on either of the softwares? Please keep in mind that I am a beginner and have never programmed a scanner before.

Don't sell yourself short. I'd try programming it yourself first.

arc15 pro or basic? Big price differnce do I really need the pro software? Sorry this will be my first scanner to own or program. After doing all the research I am beginning to think I am in over my head.

Brian, if you feel you're over your head, step back and take a breath.
The first thing you should ask is that is the BCT15 right for your area, in addition to it being right for you. This scanner does not do digital, so if your area is using that, this scanner is the wrong one, if you're interested in your public safety services.

Look your area up in the database and see if this is the case. Go over to your states' forum and see what other folks in your area are using. This will also be a good guide for you when it comes time to program whatever it is you buy. At least some of those folks may have files you can use with software to program your scanner, though I agree that learning to program it by hand is also valuable. 73s Mike

I live in forney tx which is 20 miles east of Dallas. The btc15 would be great for this area, but I am not sure if it is the right scanner for a begginner. Seems like I should maybe start out with something more basic. I would really like to know what software is the most user friendly.

Whether it's the right scanner for you is a decision that only you can make, and no one else. I' going to defer the question about the software; I've done extensive reviews on Scan Control, as well as doing some initial beta testing on the earlier versions, so my opinion is biased.

However, if you find the BCT15 with all its bells and whistles a little intimidating, a BC796 - which you could probably find used, if you look hard enough - would still fit the bill. It will be supported when rebanding finally happens, receives digital (if you ever find you need it), and has gobs of software support, Scan Control and ARC250 included. Unless you're looking for the BCT15 to do in a mobile installation? That one would certainly be easier to mount in a vehicle than a 796.
