Yup, it is a lot of money. This is truly a fantastic communications receiver. It has just about everything you would desire for this type of radio.
I have owned some of this receivers predecessors, and was very happy with them.

If I didn't just preorder the new Uniden 536, I would go for this.
Well, maybe next year.

It is a specialized receiver but considering a blocked, non P25 version is $709.95 from Universal Radio and the P25 upgrade is $300 its a good price.

IMHO P25 is not necessary for that type of receiver. (Non-trunking)
Also again IMHO, there's not too much to listen to these days on the blocked freqs.

Did I mention this is a really sweet receiver?

In my area there is a lot of P25 conventional repeater and simplex so my unblocked AR8200D gets some use there. I don't know about the blocked AR8200 but some blocked receivers go beyond the cell phone bands and exclude part of the 902-928MHz amateur and part 15 band, so I'll take an unblocked any day over blocked.

I should have stated there is no P25 conventional in my area.
I had no idea that some blocked models extend into the ham bands. In that case, I wouldn't consider the radio.
I will still check out Universal, and have a look at the specs.

A non-trunking P25 handheld receiver wouldn't be of much use to most people.
It really only appeals to a very small demographic of potential users.

I've never been a fan of HF - Ghz range handheld receivers. The HF and SSB performance is always compromised by terrible portable antenna performance, the lack of bandpass filtering, overload (when connected to a decent HF antenna), phase noise and stability issues. IMHO, that's why the IC-R10 & R20 were never really very popular models.

Handheld DC to daylight receivers are overpriced paperweights IMHO..

Now, if AOR released an updated 8600D style base model with even just conventional P25, decent HF SSB performance and a user friendly UI, for ~$1k, that would probably sell quite a few units.

Wonder why (ar8200d) doesn't do trunking? I see the new uniden coming out 01/14 but doesn't do Digital TV is there a scanner or another radio picks up the new Digital TV signals?
