Received my new 996p2 yesterday and it is up and running. Had to get used to Freescan and the characteristics of the scanner. Last Uniden I had was the 996T with ARC996. But fiddling around, changing and tweaking my programming I have my local stuff how I want it for the time being. I am quite happy with its performance and really like the form factor. Since I used to have a 996T I knew what to expect there.

Right now my only question at this point is about adjustments to P25 decoding. The audio seems slightly muffled, where as with my GRE PSR-600 it can sometimes be slightly watery. Just curious about the best way to adjust the P25 quality in the 996p2 to get the cleanest audio I can. Thanks for any suggestions.

The best way is to improve reception by radio placement or antenna improvements. This will do a lot more than trying to tweak things.

Thanks Mark. When I was testing it out it wasn't in its final location with the normal antenna. So I will see how it plays when I have it installed as planned in the S10.

With digital, antenna makes all the difference in the world. On analog if you had a weak signal you got some static with it or lower volume, where with digital it is all or nothing. If you are receiving a weak signal it won't decode it. Then there is the issue of simulcast distortion.

After installing in the truck and driving around a bit I did notice that the audio did clean up when I was in areas where I was getting a strong signal, and it was more muffled when the signal was down.

Having operated both analog and digital systems the all or nothing of digital is familiar. However, that was using Motorola radios and I know that our scanners are more of a compromise in comparison. Since I was getting a signal but the audio seemed to have a muffled tonal quality to it, I was thinking perhaps there was a setting I needed to tweak.

As I said sometimes the digital audio in the PSR-600, while typically good, at times sounded a little watery. But thinking back that may have also been more a factor of where I was located at the time in relation to the tower I was picking up.

Regardless I am quite satisfied with the performance of the 996p2. I really do like the display a lot as it is bright and easy to read while mobile. I feel it was money well spent.

It's a good mobile phase 2 radio, and based on a heavy duty performer for years, the 996xt.
I think the digital decoding is better than the 996xt.
