I live in South Florida. I crystalled up two Motorola HT220's. One on Echo channel--one on Foxtrot. Anytime POTUS was in S Fla I could always hear the plane and sometimes hear the base station on the ATT tower at Penssuco.

Aaah--good times--good listening--then E/F went away

Sorry--forgot something.

Someone is gonna ask--"Why two (2) radios.

The frequency seperation was too great for one radio. Over about 3 Mhz seperationon a Motorola HT220 and you lost sensitivity on second channel.

So had to use two radios.

Could have used a scanner--but it was SO COOL when someone saw you using a two way to listen to AF1.

"Oh--YesSir--I have the President on the radio now. And you thought I sold insurance"---hehehe

73's again

Nice! For those that don't know, the AT&T Pennsuco Florida site that was an AT&T operated E/F site for WHCA was also home to AT&T's WOM 'High Seas Radio' HF transmit site.

The Miami-area E/F site was added during Nixon's presidency, due to his frequent trips to the Miami area to hang out with a close friend of his named Bebe Rebozo. One of my E/F network coverage maps shows the site as being at Perrine, Florida, which is relatively close to Pennsuco.

Did the uplink audio level seem lower than the downlink audio level? It seemed to sound lower to me when I listened to Norway, IL site NRWYILNO.

Pennsuco, FL (top) and Norway, IL (bottom)

I never had the opportunity to use the Echo/Foxtrot network but I used the WOM facility on many occasions back in the 70's, I was located at roughly 4N 6E. Operated on the 8,12 and 16 MHz bands with a Motorola Micom Consolette. I used a Kenwood TS-520 with a Heathkit SB-200 on the ham bands but I would also use the SB-200 on the marine bands when the Micom wasn't quite enough.

On call up you would give your position so the tech operator could get the correct antennas on you then hand you off to the traffic operator to place your call, usually you called collect, you didn;t want to put your telephone calling card number of an open HF circuit!
