Hello,

What kind of scanner do I need to listen to those 3 towns? Is any encrypted?

Currently, New Brunswick Police and North Brunswick Police are encrypted. Milltown is in the clear, and the rest of the Fire and EMS services, along with the DPW are all digital and in the clear. It's highly recommended that you use one of the Uniden SDS series scanners, or a Unication pager to monitor Middlesex County 700 TRS, due to simulcast being used for the Trunked radio system.

%100 agree with @GM, I prefer the unication pagers but I have multiple and that’s the only way I would listen to multiple systems with them, one on each, being that new Brunswick FD is on NJICS and Milltown PD/FD and North Brunswick FD are on the Middlesex county TRS the uniden SDS might be better for scanning multiple systems. I admittedly have no experience whatsoever with the uniden SDS series

@mdsxfire you have hit the nail on the head. Same here no SDS, zero. All Uni, all the time.

I have been using the SDS200 since it was released and it performs great on the NJICS. New Brunswick FD is on the Union County simulcast so I can hear them loud and clear all the way up in central Essex County. The Middlesex County system can be heard around here too but I have not listened in quite some time.

The pro-2055 can't be used to monitor Milltown is that correct?
Correct. Milltown operates on the P25 Phase-II system here so at the least you'll need one of these to bring it in:

Scanner Support for TDMA
The following scanners can decode P25 Phase I, Phase II, and Motorola X2-TDMA systems.
The sites are listed as simulcast so I'd highly recommend either the SDS100 or 200 to mitigate reception issues due to simulcast distortion

Is any encrypted?
Here's a tip for you. Take a look at the talkgroup tables & focus on the "Mode" column. Any time you see an uppercase "E", as in "DE" or "TE" this denotes full-time encryption & therefore the talkgroup cannot be monitored

Kyle, would recommend one of the Uniden SDS series. I have used a psr-800 (upgraded) but the simulcast distortion in town is awful no mater what setting or antenna (or paperclip) used. Milltown is sort of in the center of the county so your radio is being bombarded by multiple sites. I have used the psr-800 in the Woodbridge area and had no problem receiving Milltown but in town no luck.

- I agree 100%,

A Unication G4 or G5 will work perfect, BUT it's not a scanner, so research it before buy one, especially if you plan on scanning multiple systems. It's present firmware doesn't support that feature yet - they say it's coming though.

BTW...New Brunswick and North Brunswick PD are both <E>; Milltown is clear (for now) (there has been some <E> rumors/talk?).
No. Bruns FD can still be monitored (on the CoTRS) and New Bruns FD can also be monitored (on the NJPSIC TRS - Union site)

Make sure you are running the latest firmware, but even then you will have simulcast issues

and you should also send it out to whistler for a legacy upgrade

What does that upgrade do? I'm not sure its worth it for me because I can't even listen to simulcast the distortion is so bad..

The upgrade will allow you to use the ezscan software add DMR and improve the reception for you on the county system A LITTLE. Have you tried using a paperclip as an antenna? Also move it around the house you might find a sweet spot.
