Saw this email in the Pro-96 yahoo group...

In case you didn't see my post in the other group. The Pro96 has a new
CPU version and part number for the component.

12449898 IC MICROPROCESSOR VER F1.5 $54.99

Wonder what kind of upgrades have been made???

Thanks for the info as it will be interesting to find out what types of upgrades have been made. Where can you get the new cpu version and the part?

You should be able to get it from Radioshack, but as far as installation, the scanner would probably have to be sent off for replacement.

Cannot find any info on this new upgrade yet, im sure "Don" would have some idea.Sure hope it has to do with 700 trunking as im using both PRO96/2096 here in ILL to hear conventionaly the 700mgz channels on Starcom. Both have much better digital decoding and audio than my Uniden 396...Maybe it has to do with the "rebanding " issue....Maybe the "dream-team" has woke up and made the dream a reality!!!

I am a RS mgr and I am going to fire off an email to the repair center on Tuesday so I can see what this CPU version changes will do.

wonder how you change that out if you did it yourself or how much radio shack will do it for?

You don't do it yourself, you can send it back to Ft Worth if desired. But it's completely possible that this is just a numbering thing (1.4 is identical in operation to 1.3) so instead of throwing wild guesses and filling this thread up with useless posts, how about awaiting a response?

Looks like some will be paying more than 100 bucks for a upgrade on it. Too bad it wasn't like you can plug in into the computer and update that way.

In the past, a CPU version number change did not always indicate any change in performance, or features. As I recall, v 1.3, to v 1.4, was strictly due to changing of the manufacture of the CPU, and nothing else. So you may be getting excited over nothing at all. It's certainly doubtful they would be adding any new features.

This is the response I got from my repair center. I am working on getting additional information.

Hi,
There was nothing published on what the firmware change did. My
technician said he was also unaware of what the firmware change
addressed. The cost on the board is $54.99 and the labor is $49.00 if
the customer wishes to have it done.

There's always one person to claim something.

And they can't make any band changes. Just as Joe said on the list it cannot be legally done, nor can it make 700MHz just suddenly improve in sensitivity.
