After requesting more information I got this reply:

It looks like the firmware update was to fix a bug to the problem which
was reported as the "Closed Mode Leak Issue" at Ohio area.


They also attatched a Service Information Bulletin that specifies the same information.

I don't think I should include that information.

What are the symptoms of the "leak"?

There's a long thread here about how certain talkgroups can get through the closed mode, I'm not sure offhand where it is but I'd bet it's in the GRE forum.

There is another problem I had with my 96 which ultimately lead to its replacement with a Uniden scanner. One of my city's TRS freqs is 867.2000. Unfortunately, there is an EXTREMELY strong birdie frequency right there as well. Can't attenuate it, or anything. When there would be a digital transmission on that freq, it would hang up and make a "hissing" noise after the P25 keyed off. It was very annoying. I had to be with the scanner constantly, waiting to hit "SCAN" as soon as it happened. If I didn't, and the channel keyed up again, it would show the TG of the previous transmission. When there was an analog transmission on that freq, it would make a very, very, very loud whistleing sound, at some points so loud that it would drown out the transmission. It was horrible!!!!!

My Pro 96 does the same thing, except the frequency is 867.9625 MHz. It did not do that until after I had it for a year, it quit doing it for a few months, and now it does that all the time. That was not listed as a birdie frequency for the Pro 96. So this problem is not fixable?

It wasn't that area that causes it specifically - it's a small bug that was discovered there (Cincy I think.)

16-bit TG "leak"

I get 16-bit leaking when I moniter the Colorado State 800 system with the bank closed. I guess I should look into getting this DSP/Hardware upgrade then huh? I would be curious to see if the update does anything else.

I monitor Austin Travis Co Fire and EMS as well as Williamson Co. I am assuming by reading this thread that this new upgrade will not improve my PRO 96 in regards to the systems that I monitor. Please let me know your thoughts.

If you are suffering from the closed mode 16-bit talkgroup bug, this will help. Otherwise it will not.

This last paragraph sounds kinda fishy... I wonder if the real problem is that the radio is picking private calls, or phone patches on this type of system, and this upgrade is to stop that. My 2-cents... If i was to pay for it, and have it installed into my radio, you better dam well tell me what it is going to do to it!!

Pro96's (all GRE radios actually) do not pick up private calls or phone patches. I'm not sure what you could be referring to...
