This is on the main page: http://www.radioreference.com/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=535

Can anyone elaborate on this? Why has Fairfax gotten a contract for EF Johnson equipment? I'm guessing it is for the school busses, public works, etc. that will soon be leaving the LTR system and coming over to the Motorola system... :?: Am I right?

Edit: On second thought, it says the contract was awarded for PORTABLE radios. So this doesn't sound like something that would be used for school busses. Hmmm... ?

(I must admit, the EF Johnson 5100 series radios do look kinda cool...)

Thanks, I'm aware of that. The 5100s actually look like fairly nice radios.

What I'm trying to find out is the intended use for these radios. I'm involved with the FD here and I haven't heard anything about getting EF Johnson radios, and I don't see why busses would be using portables, so I was just curious.

The portables might be for the new water treatment plant in Lorton in which i've been monitoring a new trunk system popping up down there with a cc of 868.3125. 8)

868.3125 is listed as a part of the existing LTR system, so it would appear that they may be converting the LTR system to a Motorola system (you didn't specify the type of control channel you're hearing though).

i'm using trunker and so fari have a cc 868.3125 and 2 vc at 867.275 and 867.4125 techs were speaking on them last week. and the only place i can think of is the new water treatment plant in Lorton, because not getting cc in northern partr of county but getting it at 99 percent here in Woodbridge which is part of prince william cty just a stone's throw from lorton. It's an astro system and the 3 tg's i've gotten 3 tg's from the techs i just have to find where i've written them down. meet me in the chat room for further info if needed

Fairfax is putting another 800mhz radio system in place. It will be for all of the county agencies EXCEPT Public Safety, like School buses, building inspectors, trash trucks, etc..... It will be a analog 800mhz system. They are in the process of installing it now. The Johnson contract is for the new system, no one in Public Safety will get Johnson radios. In fact we just recieved 500 new Motorola protables for Police & Fire use. Every Police officer & Animal Control officer are issued portables . The fire dept assigns 4 portables for each Engine, Truck & Rescue, the EMS units get 2 each. We have 500 more on order. They have no plans to switch to the johnson radios, we will stick with motorola. The reason they got the Johnson contract, it seems some people like maybe building inspectors and some others will use portables instead of mobiles. The system will use 7 transmitters at basically the same locations as the Public Safety System.

When the system comes on line Public Safety will have some talk groups in case the public safety system goes down, we will have a backup.

No prob, Here at PSCC we don't have to know much about the radio system, but there is a guy in the back who works at the radio shop and is assigned to the PSCC, and he knows EVERYTHING, in fact he helps set these systems up and programs the radios and does it all. He does everything. SO if anyone has anything else please ask and I'll get the answer if it has to do with the Fairfax radio system.

I'm still a rookie at this stuff, but I just got a Bearcat 296 and I'm learning quickly......but please Email me if anyone has any questions about Fairfax or No Va........
